‘There came a day unlike any other…..’, you guys know the rest. Introduced in Avengers #1 (1963) by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, The Avengers are Marvel’s premier team of superheroes. They originally assembled when Loki tricked the Hulk in attacking a train. Concerned for his friend, Rick Jones tried to call the F4 but Loki used his magic to call Thor instead. However, Iron Man, Ant-man (Pym) and the Wasp intercepted the call as well. Together, they found out that Hulk was framed and worked together to defeat Thor’s stepbrother. After they decided to continue to work together and with the suggestion of Wasp, they became the Avengers. Iron Man, Thor, Ant-man (later Giant-man), Wasp and Hulk were the founding members, with Rick Jones being considered an honorable member. Jarvis could also be considered an honorable member.
However, it wasn’t long before the fractures began to form. When the team was tricked by Space Phantom into attacking the Hulk, he left the team. Chasing after him, the team found the frozen body of Captain America, who would join the team and retroactively be given founding membership. After the remaining founding members decided they needed to leave the team, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver were recruited into the team with Cap as the leader. During this time, Cap went to Professor X for help with the Stranger. He sent Cap to recruit Avenger X. She turned out to be evil and was later defeated. Afterwards, Swordsman (DuQuesne) joined the team as a mole for the Mandarin and was later kicked out of the team. Hercules would join Cap’s team. After Giant-man and Wasp rejoined the team, Black Panther joined the team, but this turned out to be a ruse to access the Avengers to see if they were a treat to Wakanda. Vision was sent to attack the Avengers, but turned against his creator, Ultron and joined the Avengers. Black Knight (Whitman) would warn the Avengers of a plan by the Masters to attack them, but he was turned away when they believed he was his uncle, the villainous Black Knight (Garrett). He infiltrated the Masters and betrayed the team to save the Avengers, joining the team.
Even though she tried to join the Avengers earlier, it was until she had a fight with her then lover Daredevil that Black Widow finally joined the team only to leave shortly after. When Swordsman tried to change his way and rejoined the team, he brought Mantis with him. Beast applied for membership and joined alongside Moondragon and Hellcat. After some time-travel adventure in the Wild West, Two-Gun Kid found himself trapped in the present and joined the team. Whizzer (Frank) was given honorary membership when he believed that Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver were his kids. After he was revived and spent some time recovering, Wonder Man joined the team and developed a lifelong friendship with Beast. Having aided the team with Korvac, the GOTG 3000 team were given honorary membership, which included Major Victory, Yondu, Charlie-27, Martinex, Starhawk, Aleta and Nikki. Captain Mar-Vell was given a posthumously membership following his battle and death with cancer. Following this, Henry Guyrich forced the Avengers to accept certain rules including forcing a rule that one member of the team must be of color. Ms. Marvel (Danvers) was invited to join, and Captain America got Falcon to join, though Falcon would leave soon after feeling he wasn’t worthy of the role just because he was black.
Now we head into the 80’s where things start getting complicated as we start seeing multiple teams being formed. After Ultron created her and she also betrayed him, Jocasta remained at the mansion and was eventually given special membership. Moondragon used her powers to force Tigra to join the team and She-Hulk was invited by Wasp to join the team. Monica Rambeau (then Captain Marvel) would turn to the Avengers for aid in controlling her powers and would eventually be recommended to lead the team by Captain America. Thanos’ brother, Starfox, would visit the Avengers and asked to join the team. With Vision as the new chairman, Hawkeye was given the task of making a second team of Avengers stationed on the west coast, the West Coast Avengers. Wonder-man and Tigra joined him with his then wife, Mockingbird and James Rhodes as Iron man, forming the founding members. Moira Brandon offers the team her mansion and she was given honorary membership. Namor would join the east coast team while Thing would aid and join the West Coast team. Dr. Druid would force the Avengers to allow him to join. Moon Knight joined the West Coast team and Namor’s then lover, Marrina, was given honorary membership. Firebird was giving reserved membership with the West Coast team. Ravonna forced Dr. Druid into mind-controlling the east coast team while Yellowjacket (DeMara) was given honorary membership before she went to the future to join the GOTG 3000 team. Demolition Man was given membership by Captain America but was never seen in the team. After the east team broke up, Captain America and Thor joined Gilgamesh, Mr. Fantastic and Invisible woman to reform the Avengers. Over at the west coast, USAgent was forced on the team by the UN, which caused Hawkeye to quit. Quasar would be given reserve membership in the team and after reviving, Jim Hammond’s Human Torch joined the WCA.
Moving into the 90’s, starting with Gilgamesh being heavily injured, and fellow Eternal Sersi joining the team to replace him on the east team, while Stingray allowing the team to use his hydrobase as their home base and was given reserve membership. Despite having tried to join a few times, Spider-man joined the team as a reserve member, alongside his former enemy Sandman and teenager Rage. Over in the west coast, Machine man was given reserve and then full membership. When Quicksilver rejoined the team, he brought his wife Crystal and daughter Luna with him, with Crystal joining the team not long after. Living Lightning and Julia Carpenter’s Spider-woman aided the west coast team against the Society of Living Lightning and were given full membership. Thunderstrike joined the east coast time when he was Thor. Having initially being antagonist wanting to kill Sersi, dimension crossing members of the Gatherers, Swordsman (Javart) and Madgelene would switch sides and given honorary membership. Darkhawk was the last member of the West Coast team to join before the team was broken up by Vision. Shi’Ar agent Deathcry would join the team under orders from Lilandra, following the Shi’ar/Kree war. A clone of Madame Masque, Masque, helped the Avengers and was given honorary status before she was kidnapped by the real Madame Masque. After the majority of the team were believe killed during the Onslaught saga and returned from the pocket dimension, Justice and Firestar joined the team.
Next, we move into the 21st century where things start to get complicated, with multiple teams and spin-offs. The first recruit of the century was someone the team didn’t initially want on the team but were forced to recruit, Triathlon, who was forced by their UN liaison as a way to accept but a minority member and to try a save face with their campaign against the Triune Understanding. Jarvis’s sponsored child, Silverclaw, was given reserved membership while she studied in college. After aiding a team in space and helping fight against the Kree who wanted to turn Earth into a prison planet, Jack of Hearts was given membership during the Kang Dynasty arc. After losing his custody of Cassie, Scott Lang’s Ant-man joined the team. When the Avengers tracked down the Wrecking Crew in England and became embroiled in a fight with Morgan LeFay, a single mother named Kelsey Shorr was given the chance to become Captain Britian but since she chooses the Sword instead of the medallion, she was forced to never see her children again. Since the kids were taken into the Avenger’s care, she joined the team to be with them. (Don’t worry. She was reunited with them eventually). Then came one of the biggest events of the Avengers tenure, when Scarlet Witch went insane and attacked the Avengers. The damage she caused made the team break up.
But they soon returned when Electro cause a major prison break in Rykers Island which saw, Cap, Iron man, Luke Cage, “Jessica Drew”, Daredevil, Spider-man and the prisoner Sentry trying to contain it. Afterwards, Iron man and Cap decided to reform the Avengers with these heroes. Luke Cage and “Jessica Drew”, who use her Spider-woman identity, joined the team, dubbed the New Avengers, with Daredevil refusing membership and Sentry missing. While searching for the escaped Sauron, the team encountered Wolverine, who Iron man recruited to be someone who would do what needed to be done. The team, along with X-men, Fantastic Four and others, went searching for Sentry, who learnt the truth of his past and their lost memories and joined the team. Although DD refused to join the team, he recommended the hero Ronin to join the team, which turned out to be Echo. Following Civil War, Iron Man and Ms. Marvel (Danvers) recruited a new team of Might Avengers, which they recruited old member and new member Ares. Luke Cage began leading a team of New Avengers against SRA which saw Dr. Strange and Iron Fist joining his team. When Norman Osborn took over the superhuman community, Loki, under the guise of Scarlet Witch used his magic to help Hank Pym form a new Mighty Avengers team, which recruited Amadeus Cho, Stature and Vision (Jonas) into the team. The real Jessica Drew Spider-woman join the New Avengers alongside Bucky, now Captain America following the Secret Invision.
Into the 2010, where things will get very difficult to confirm who is a member and how was just using the name. Following the fall of Norman Osborn, the Avengers were split into 3 teams. The first team were the Secret Avengers, which saw Valkyrie, Ant-Man (O’Grady) and Nova (Rider) joining the team, with Sharon Carter being the team’s SHIELD Liaison. The New Avengers, led by Luke Cage, saw his wife, Jessica Jones-Cage, becoming an official member and Victoria Hand being a reluctant liaison. Hank Pym, Tigra and others formed the Avengers Academy to train the next generation of heroes, with guest teachers giving classes including Speedball. Prince of Orphan was given honorary membership in the Secret team. The main team, which had Maria Hill as their liason, eventually saw Noh-Varr as Protector joining. When the Hood sought the Infinity Gem, he fought the Red Hulk, who went to the Avengers for help and joined the team after the Hood was defeated. During Fear Itself, Daredevil put himself in harm’s way to protect the Cages’ child, earning his place in Luke’s team. Cap began reforming the main team, recruiting Black Panther’s wife, Storm and SHIELD member, Quake, into the team. The Secret Avengers were reformed under Hawkeye’s lead, which saw Captain Britian and later Agent Venom joining. Around this time, Flux, a superhuman that was dying, was given honorary membership before his death. Dr. Octopus technically became a member when he took over Spider-man’s body.
Following AVX, Cap approached Havok to lead a new team of Avengers that were a mix of humans and mutants, the Uncanny Avengers, or as it was called in the comics, the Unity Division. Other on the main team, they had a massive recruitment drive which saw Hyperion (Marcue Milton), Cannonball, Captain Universe (Devoux) (and as such the Enigma Force as well), Manifold, Shang-Chi, Smasher (Kane) and Sunspot being recruited into the team. Over in the Uncanny team, Rogue would join the team after helping with Red Skull and to get Xavier’s brain back. The Secret Avengers would fall under SHIELD’s control with Nick Fury Jr., Phil Coulson, Taskmaster and Sarah Garza joining that team with Hawkeye leading them. Wolverine recruited Sunfire into the Uncanny team. Following Age of Ultron, Hank Pym and Vision set up a new team to battle rogue A.I.s. They recruited Victor Mancha, a Doombot and Agent Monica Chang. Following their battle with the Builders, Ex Nihilo and his sister, Abyss joined the team alongside Nightmask and the latest Starbrand (Connor). Alexis the Protector joined the AI team. When Thanos led an invasion on Earth, a new team of Mighty Avengers were form with Luke Cage as the leader that saw the recruitment of Blue Marvel, White Tiger, Power man (Alvarez) and Blade (under the guise of Ronin). Kaluu aided this team later on and joined the team soon after.
Following Axis, Brother Voodoo, who had been killed earlier, was revived joined the Uncanny Avengers team. Sabretooth, now turned good, joined that team for one mission on Counter-Earth. Nova (Alexander) was given membership by Thor but was allowed to be an active member due to his age. In an effort to stop the Illuminati, Sunpsot formed his own New Avengers and recruited Validator and Pod-2. Following the Secret Wars, The Unity Division saw a shake up with Rogue taking the leadership and seeing Deadpool, Human Torch (Storm) and the Inhuman Synapse joining that team. The main team had broken up but when Nova (Alexander) was attack by Warbringer, Captain America (Wilson), Iron Man and new recruits Thor (Foster), Ms. Marvel (Khan) and Spider-man (Morales) formed the All-New, All-Different Avengers. Meanwhile, Singularity had arrived in the Prime universe and together with She-hulk, Captain Marvel (Danvers) and Medusa formed the A-force. They would later be joined by Dazzler and Nico Minoru as well as a Thor version of Dazzler. Sunspot later revealed that he had brought the rights to AIM and rebranded them as Avengers Idea Mechanics, recruiting Wiccan, Hulking, Songbird, and Squirrel Girl. A Hydra influenced Captain America from an alternate universe believed he was the Prime version and joined the team. Over on the Uncanny team, Cable helped the team with a few missions and joined their squad. Hank Pym’s unknown daughter, Nadia Pym, later Nadia Van Dyne, showed up looking for her father and joined the ANAD team as Wasp. Sunspot, now calling himself Citizen V, rebranded his New Avengers into U.S.Avengers, bringing Toni Ho then Iron Patriot and Robert Maverick’s Red Hulk.
A fight between the Grandmaster and the Challenger saw the Grandmaster’s daughter, Voyager, use her powers to make the team believe she was always a member. Once the crisis was averted and the team learnt the truth, she was called an Avengers when she left to imprison the Challengers. The team broke up (again) until rogue Celestials and the swarm attacked the planet, the team reformed with Ghost Rider (Reyes) joining the team. Meanwhile, Hawkeye reformed the West Coast team with Kate Bishop, recruiting Gwenpool, Kid Omega, Ms. America and Fuse. Jeff the Land Shark was adopted by Gwenpool and Alloy joined the WCA before it disbanded. When Nyx was released from her prison, Black Panther sent a number of heroes to quell tensions, including Blue Marvel, Toni Ho, Pod-2, Wasp (Nadia), Lighting, Gomi and Bill the Lobster. They were known as Avenger World. During the War of the Realms, Captain Marvel (Danvers) formed a new team called the War Avengers, which recruited Venom (Brock), Lady Sif and Weapon H.
Finally, we head into 2020s (Which at the time of writing this is only on 2024). In order to fight Kulan Gath, Dr. Strange and Elektra (then Daredevil) form the Savage Avengers. She recruited Conan The Barbarian, Son of Satan, Magik, Juggernaut, Punisher, Dr. Doom, Ghost Rider (Blaze) and Kang (two versions of him!!). After fighting them for a while, The Mephisto construct of Nighthawk was invited to join the Avengers by Black Panther alongside a young girl named Brandy Selby became the newest Starbrand. An Alternate version of Miles Morales that was a Deathlok reformed the Savage team with Cloak and Dagger joining. Eventually the main team moved to the sentient floating city called Impossible City. Cap was originally planning to reform the Unity Squad to help build Mutant/Human relations, but the Fall of X pushed him to reform the team with Pyslocke (Kwannon) and Monet joining the squad. Wasp (Janet) set up a news support and investigating business name Avengers Inc. where she recruited Victor Shade, a former Ultron MK 12 that wanted to make amends. Over the main team, Avengers Academy student Hazmat joined the main team. Having realized that he was working for the Hydra Cap, Blob left the MLF and joined the Uncanny team.
Following Blood Hunt, Cap assembled an Emergency Response Squad, bringing in old member and new members, the former Power Pack member, Lightspeed, and former New Warrior, Night Thrasher.
