He may look like a big blue ape or cat, but behind that is one of the greatest minds in the Marvel Universe. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in Uncanny X-men #1 (1963), the only thing that made Hank McCoy different from other people are his big hands and feet. He was a high school American Football player, who was later recruited into the X-men when it was discovered he was a mutant, becoming one of the founding members. After leaving the X-men, he went onto to gain his doctorate. During this time, he developed a serum to allow normal people to gain mutant powers but was forced to drink it in order to stop it from falling into the wrong hand. This caused him to mutate into the furry Beast we know today, first with grey fur but because printers were still shit, he soon became blue the next issue.

Beast will always be associated with the X-men but, next to Wolverine, he has been on the most teams of all the X-men. He was a main member of the Avengers, to which he still holds a huge present in, Defenders, Secret Avengers, X-Treme X-men to name just a few.

As for figure, because of his fury design, he is hard to really release a figure of as they need to make a new sculpt for him. However, given his huge popularity he has quite a few figures of him. His first Marvel legends was part of Toybiz’s series 4 which would see a re-release with a lob coat as part of the X-men Legends box set. When Hasbro begin making the line, they released an Astonishing X-men version in a Wal-Mart exclusive Nemesis wave. It wouldn’t be until Hasbro relaunched the line that he would receive a first Appearance as a Toys-R-Us exclusive box set. He would receive a classic update as part of the Caliban wave. This figure would see 2 repaints, both as Fan Channel exclusives but one as his grey form and another re-release with a new head and lab-coat.

Have

First Appearance / Training Uniform

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Toy-R-Us Marvel Legends All-New X-men Box Set

  • Background:
    • Hank McCoy was one of the original X-men and as such he wore the same training uniform as the rest of the team wore. The only thing that is different is that he didn’t wear gloves and boots. It should be known that many of his later non-furry costumes are based on this.
  • Why you need it for your collection?:
    • If you’re a Beast fan then I say this would be perfect for you. It is also nice to have the set for your First Appearance collection. But if you want only one Beast then this can be skipped as it is rare and expensive.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No. Now many people argue that this set should be done on a teenage molds. However Hank McCoy has always been a big person so this figure is the only one that actually works for that character. I wouldn’t be surprised if they repainted this into the Graduated and X-factor costumes.

Grey Beast

Recommend Figure:  Hasbro Fan Channel Exclusive Marvel Legends X-men Retro Best

  • Background:
    • Shortly after he was rescued by the Giant Size X-men team, Beast left the team and went onto gain his doctorate. He later joined a company where he began developing a serum that could suppress mutant abilities. He later learnt that a terrorist group wanted to use his serum to wipe out mutants so when they tried to steal it, he drank the only serum he had. Instead of suppressing his mutant powers, it instead enhanced him and transformed in this form. Because the printers were still bad at the time, he was soon given a blue color to make it easier.
  • Why you need it for your collection?:
    • If you are a Beast fan, then this is a most for your collection, as it was an important part of Beast’s story, which would come back in some form, like AOA Dark Beast. Some are getting him for the accessories as well. However, he wasn’t part of any teams at this time and would soon turn into his blue form not soon after, so he can be skipped.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No.

Classic / Blue Fur

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends X-men Caliban Wave Beast OR Fan Channel Exclusive X-men Retro – Beast

  • Background:
    • After leaving the X-men, Hank developed a serum to give normal people mutant powers for a short time. However he used it on himself to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands, which mutated him into a fury Beast, grey at first before turning blue. It was around this time that he was invited to join the Avengers before going off to lead the Defenders team.
  • Why you need it for your collection?:
    • Before Hasbro announced their version, the best version of Beast was the early Toybiz Beast figure. But now Hasbro has done their own and IMPO has blown the TB one out of the water. This is needed for most X-men teams and will complete the gold team from the 90’s. It is also needed for many other teams including Avengers and New Defenders. Either version works but the Retro version comes with a calm head.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No.

Astonishing X-men

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Wal-Mart Exclusive Marvel Legends Nemesis Wave Astonishing X-men Beast

  • Background:
    • After Xorn’s attack on New York, Cyclops took charge of the X-men. In order for the team to appear more media friendly, he ditched the leather jackets in favor of a more superhero-look costume. This is what Beast came up with.
  • Why you need it for your collection?:
    • I said only get this bad figure if you want to complete the Astonishing X-men team or if you want to complete Nemesis figure.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • Yes and no. Yes because the figure is bad but no cause the costume is very out of date nowadays.
