Colossus’s Little Snowflake as certainly become a big Snowflake. Introduced in Giant-Size X-Men #1 by Len Wein and Dave Cockrum, Illyana was first seen when she was saved by her older brother, Colossus, from a runaway tractor when he activated his powers for the first time. However, while Colossus went to the states to become an X-men, Illyana stayed in Russia. She was later kidnapped by Miss Locke, who forced the X-men to rescue Arcade from Doom. Colossus allowed her to stay with him in America after but she was soon kidnapped by Belasco, ruler of Limbo, who trained her in magic. The X-men tried to rescue her but failed and returned to Earth but went straight back to try again. However, time worked differently in Limbo then Earth, going faster, so by the time they found Illyana, she had grew into a teenager.

Illyana soon joined the young team of mutants, the New Mutants. She eventually learnt that she could summon a piece of her soul as a sword, thus named it Soul Sword. During Inferno, Illyana was transformed into a demon and after a battle with S’ym, she returned to younger self. She was returned to her parents but an attack by Soul Skinner cause Illyana to contact the Legacy Virus. With no cure for the virus, she died, becoming the first victim of the disease. This caused Colossus to leave the X-men and later (after returning to the team) sacrificed his life in order to send the cure airborne. Illyana’s Soul Sword was given to the new ruler of Limbo, Amanda Sefton.

Using magic and a Bloodstone, Belasco was able to resurrect Illyana in her Darkchyld form. She encounter the New X-men and later regain her soul from Belasco before returning to Earth. She rejoined the New Mutants and later joined Cyclops side of the X-men. She also became Pixie teacher in magic. Magik was one of the Phoenix Five but the aftermath cause Colossus to fear her. She joined Cyclops’ renegade team after helping them escaped prison. During this time, she would travel back in time and became Dr. Strange’s student in magic. She later helped Strange against the Empirikul. She later return to the X-mansion and  reunited her her brother. She would later send the school to Limbo in order to prevent mutants from dying from the Terrigen Cloud. During this time she met a young mutant that was predicted to become a terror. After being forced to kill her, her soul was placed in Illyana’s Soul Sword. She remained with the team after they returned to Earth.

Magik is not a character that many people know about outside the comic. That is mainly because she has not been seen in many other medias. In the 90’s X-men cartoon, she was seen but only as her younger self and the sister of Colossus. However, she receive a big boost in fame when she was brought back to life in the late 2000’s. It was actually this version that saw her get a Marvel Legends figure in the SDCC Book of Vashanti box set that was later re-released as a Walgreen exclusive.

Renegade

Recommend Figure:Hasbro Walgreens Marvel Legends Magik

  • Background:
    • Shortly after the Avengers VS X-men storyline, all of the Phoenix Five had problems with their powers. Magik helped Cyclops and Emma Frost escape prison and joined their renegade team of X-men. She would wear this costume until after the Secret War storyline.
  •  Why you need it for your collection?:
    • When she was first released, in the Book of Vashanti box set, she was the most expensive in the after-market, running up to and including 200. However, Hasbro saw the demand for her and repainted her as a Walgreens exclusive. It is that version I recommend getting as it is the better value version. While not a main X-men character until recently, this is a must for any X-men Fans but also New Mutants and Dr. Strange fans.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No. New Mutant costume please.
