She probably asks herself how Nick Fury did it for so many years. Introduced in New Avengers #4 (2004) by Brian Michael Bendis and David Finch, after Fury’s illegal infiltration of Latveria was exposed, she was given the role of Director of SHIELD by the President. There was just one condition. Get the Super-human community under control. This made her butt heads with the recently reformed Avengers (the New Avengers). She would eventually earn Iron Man’s respect but when she talked to Captain America about the Super-human Registration act, which led to her trying to capture Cap but failing. This led to Cap opposing the Act and many heroes joining him. During the Civil War, she admitted to Iron Man that she didn’t want the role of Director and suggested he should take it, which he did when his side won, and he was appointed Director of SHIELD.

Maria would stay on as his deputy. She would abandon SHIELD when the Helicarrier was infected by a Skrull virus during the Secret Invasion. She would meet up with Nick Fury and help stop the Skrull invasion. When Norman Osborn was given the role of Director, Maria was dismissed. Osborn declared her a fugitive and sent agents to capture her. She began working with Iron Man to help bring down Osborn. They were eventually captured but escaped. They would hide in Broxton and were on hand to help the Avengers against Osborn in the Siege of Asgard. After Cap was made the head of SHIELD, she was assigned as the SHIELD liaison of the Mighty Avengers team.

She was later reassigned as Director of SHIELD. After working with Bruce Banner for a while, she discovered a Cosmic Cube, which would gain a physical body as Kobik. She would set up a town to act as a prison for superhuman criminals and used Kobik to alter their minds and appearances to rehabilitate them. When the prisoners broke free of mind control, they began a riot which led to the Avengers discovering the prison. She was put on trial because of this. With the testimony of Cap (who was replaced by the Hydra Cap), she was removed as Director. She later faked her own death but would return to help Black Widow.

Despite coming off as a gruff person, Maria Hill has quite a few fans. She would receive several figures over the years. Her first Marvel Legends was part of Hasbro ill-conceived attempt at moving the line into 2-packs only, with her being packaged with Classic Iron Man. She would later get a “remake” when he head (and hands in a way) were packed in with the Controller Wave’s Quake.
