It is the being of life, death and rebirth. Introduced in X-Men #101 (1976), the Phoenix Force is one of the oldest cosmic entities in the Marvel Universe. It would travel across the universe, endowing mortals with its powers. One of the earliest known mortals was the Earthling cave woman, Firehair, who would join the Avengers BC to stop some mad Celestials. It would later become worshipped by the Shi’Ar as one of their gods, with Rook’shir becoming its host. However, he would be driven mad by the Force and became the Dark Phoenix, leading to a rampage that made the Shi’Ar fear the Force.
It would return to Earth a number of times, like when its host was a Viking woman. This led to the force being worshipped as the Thunderbird by Native American. Another host was from Kun’Lun, the home of the Iron Fist. Centuries later, it would encounter her most famous host, Jean Grey. Copying her personality and placing Jean in a cocoon, it would replace Jean in the X-men. However, it would become corrupted by the Hellfire club and became the Dark Phoenix. This led to the Shi’Ar putting it in a trail by combat, which led Jean’s personality to sacrifice herself to stop the Phoenix. The Phoenix would then choose Madeline Pryor as her next host before moving onto Rachel Summers.
When Jean return from the dead and Xavier opened the school to all mutants, it would bond with Jean again, but Jean would die again when she was killed my Xorn. It would try and resurrect Jean but was stopped by the X-men and would later be forced to bond with the Stepford Cuckoo and their hundreds of clones. During the AVX, it was “destroyed” by Iron Man but was absorbed by 5 X-men member, Cyclops, Magik, Emma Frost, Namor and Colossus. They tried to use the Force to help the world but became corrupted by it leading to Cyclops absorbing all of it. He was stopped by Scarlet Witch and Hope Summers, who took the force in herself. Hope used the power to restore mutantkind after M-day.
Cyclops would later reveal that he had a Phoenix egg which he used to bond with the force and use to try and stop the Incursions but was instead taken by Mr. Fantastic Arc. He arrived in Doom’s battle world and tried to help restore the Multiverse but was destroyed by Doom. It would of course be resurrected when the universe was restored. It would be bonded with Thane to defeat his father Thanos and later Quentin Quire to in the Asgard war against the Shi’Ar gods. After trying to bond with the younger Jean, it would resurrect the older one, but she rejected her. It would later take many heroes and villains and made them compete to be its new host with Echo becoming the winner.
Phoenix, or rather Jean Grey’s version, is an extremely popular version of the Phoenix Force, receiving many figures over the years. It would receive a figure and a Dark Phoenix variant as part of series 6 Toybiz line. It was to get a White Room variant as well as a Phoenix 5 Cyclops, but both were cancelled by Hasbro. It did receive an upgrade as part of the Juggernaut wave. This was later given a Dark Phoenix version as a TRU 2-pack with Cyclops. This version was later repainted and re-release as part of the X-men Retro wave 2.
