He was a Black superhero who was told not to be a superhero. Introduced in Adam: Legend of the Blue Marvel #1 (2008) by Kevin Grevioux and Mat Broome, Adam Brashear was a child genius, who joined the Marines to help in the Korean war. There he met his friend Conner Sims. Adam later became the lead of a project involving Anti-Matter, in order to develop a new energy source. However, an explosion caused Adam and Sims to be bombarded with negative energies. This caused Sims’ body to seemingly be disassembled and gave Adam his superpowers. Adam would become Blue Marvel, hiding his identity behind a mask. After years of saving people, he was given the Medal of Freedom by President John F. Kennedy. However, the President reluctantly asked him to retire as it was discovered that he was black, which at the time (1960) was something Americans couldn’t accept.

Adam agreed to this but not before one last mission to the Blue Area of the Moon where he became friends with Uatu. He would go into hiding and would eventually marry the agent sent to monitor him and had three children. At some point in the 1970’s, he would join a make-shift team to stop the Deathwalker without his costume. He would eventually come out of retirement when the Avengers needed his help with the Anti-Man. After this fight Adam decided to return to full-time heroics without a mask. When Thanos’ force attacked New York city using Shuma Gorath, Blue Marvel joined Luke Cage’s Mighty Avengers team. He would eventually come into conflict with his son Max, who wanted to save his brother Kevin from the Omniverse but the only way to save Kevin was to leave him in the Omniverse. Blue Marvel and Max would begin working together in order to save Kevin and Adam would begin a relationship with Monica Rambeau, now calling herself Spectrum.

When Captain Marvel and Black Panther set up a government sanctioned team that would take a proactive approach to stop potential threats, they invited Blue Marvel and Spectrum to join the team. He would later encounter Anti-Man, who Kevin told him was his friend Conner Sims. The team would work to try and say Anti-man but would eventually be dropped by the Government and absorbed by the Alpha Flight Program. He would join with Jimmy Woo and Night Thrasher as the Three X’s. After Dr. Doom was framed for an act of Terrorism, the government sent Blue Marvel to capture him. He would learn that Doom was innocent, but he was blasted by the despot. Blue Marvel would continue to hunt Doom but would fail to do so.

Blue Marvel has been requested by collectors for quite some time, particularly youtuber and ACBA artist BoogNice. He would receive a figure as part of the Avengers Controller wave.

The Ultimates

Recommend Figure:  Hasbro Marvel Legends Avengers’ Controller wave – Blue Marvel

  • Background:
    • Following the Secret Wars, Captain Marvel approached Black Panther to help set up a Pro-active team, called the Ultimates (which was taken from the Ultimate universe team of the same name). Blue Marvel, alongside his girlfriend Spectrum and young hero America Chavez, were approached to join. While the rest only receive minor updates to older costumes, Blue Marvel receive a whole new look.
  • Why you need it for your collection?:
    • While this particular figure is needed to complete the Ultimates team (which we only need a comic book America Chavez for), you may also want to get him for your Avengers, Captain Marvel, Black Panther collections and more.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No.
