Parents will do anything for their kids, even break the law. Introduced in Avengers #181 (1979) by David Michelinie and John Byrne, Scott Lang is a electronic expert who used his abilities to burgle house which landed him in prison and had his wife divorce him. While in prison he studied to further his degrees and was later paroled for good behavior where upon he was hire by Stark Industries. However, he learnt that his daughter was diagnosed with a serious heart condition and he turned back to burglary in order to get the help she needed. One night, he happened to enter the house of Hank Pym and discovered the Ant-man suit. He stole that and used it to rescue the doctor who could help his daughter from Darren Cross. Getting the doctor to his daughter in hospital, he was greeted by Hank Pym. Prepared to be sent to jail, he was shocked when Pym told him he had watched him and had learnt of his heroism. Pym allowed Scott to become the new Ant-man (since Pym was going by Yellowjacket at the time as well.)

While he would rarely have his own major adventure, Lang would go onto become one of biggest supporting characters. While he was working in Stark Industries, he help Iron Man find out who Justin Hammer was and tried to help to cure the Hulk. He later helped Yellowjacket to rescue the Wasp from Dr. Solomon and helped the Avenger against Taskmaster. He later met the Fantastic Four, Rick Jones, Alpha Flight and Spider-man,  and later aided the Avengers during the Masters raid on the Avengers Mansion. When Stane took over Stark Industries, he resigned and became the Fantastic Four’s scientist assistant when Reed was missing. He help Iron Man in the Armor War.

When many heroes were believed killed in the Onslaught Saga, he joined up with Heroes for Hire, which expanded greatly to included many other heroes. After the Kang War, where Kang had taken over the Earth, Lang was offered a place in the Avengers but he couldn’t be full time because of his daughter. That changed after his ex-wife filed for full custody and Scott went to the Avengers needing a place to be. He would clashed constantly with Jack Of Heart but Jack earned his respect after he saved his daughter. Scott was believed killed during Avengers Disassemble but was actually went forward in time where he met his daughter Cassie (now the Young Avenger Stature) only for her to be killed by Dr. Doom. After a brief stunt with the Defenders, he was made the leader of a new team of Fantastic Four. He was later one of many heroes Nick Fury choose for replace him during Original Sin. Cassie was later revived by Dr. Doom during Axis and the father and daughter would become a duo as Ant-man and Cassie’s new persona Stinger. After being forced to be a spy for Stevil’s Hydra, he went with the Guardians of the Galaxy.

To me, there is Scott Lang is Ant-man. Hank Pym never really lasted very long with it, usually ditching it for another identity and Eric O’Grady was never really suited to be a hero. Scott has used the identity longer than anyone. Unfortunately, he was never really one for people asking a figure for. TB did a couple in their Marvel Legends line in the Classic costume, but they could have been Hank Pym at the same time. Hasbro did a couple as well, a few with the SDCC Ant-man set and another (more distinct version) as a (former) TRU / Etailer Exclusive 2-pack with his daughter in her Stinger persona. Hasbro also redid a classic version in their Vintage wave. They then remade the Classic version as part of Target Con 2023.

Have

Classic

Recommend Figure:  (Micro) Hasbro Marvel Marvel Universe Original Avengers Box Set, (Small)Hasbro Marvel Legends Vintage Wave 2 Ant-man pack-in with Wasp, (Mid) Hasbro Marvel Infinite Series Wave 4 Ant-man, (Normal)Hasbro Target Exclusive Marvel Legends Ant-man – Ant-man

  • Background:
    • For most of his early career, Lang would wear what was essentially Hank Pym earlier costume for the Ant-man.
  • Why you need it for your collection?:
    • As seen above, there has been a number of versions of this in various sizes. If you are an Ant-man fan, then you should collect at least one of the recommended figures above, but if you just want a normal size Ant-man, then I recommend trying to get the Target exclusive figure.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No.

Avengers

Recommend Figure:  Hasbro SDCC Exclusive Marvel Legends Ant-man Box set Ant-man (Mini-fig)

  • Background:
    • Shortly after officially joining the Avengers, a few of the team got a more armored look to their costumes. This is what Lang would wear to until and after his “death” and his return.
  • Why you need it for your collection?:
    • The only figure available for this version is a Mini-Fig that came in an SDCC exclusive box set. While the set can be found cheaply on a number of site, I wouldn’t recommend getting it as it is only a small statue rather then an actual figure.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • Yes, as a full size version.

Astonishing

Recommend Figure:  Hasbro Toy-R-Us / E-tailers Exclusive Marvel Legends Ant-man and the Wasp 2-pack Ant-man

  • Background:
    • After the success of his movie, Marvel launched a new solo series for Ant-man, under the named Astonishing Ant-man. As such he got a new costume somewhat based on his movie version.
  • Why you need it for your collection?:
    • If you have never gotten an Ant-man figure, then this is the one to get. If you have the older one, then I would recommend getting this if you want an unique version of Lang rather then TB or vintage Ant-man which could be any of the 3 major Ant-men. I also recommend getting this because that figure is very outdated at the moment. Plus he comes with a unique character in Stinger. Don’t worry if you can find it in TRU as it will be availible on many online stores like BBTS and Entertainment Earth.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No.
