The protector of the universe is just a boy from Wisconsin. Introduced in Captain America #217 (1978) by Don Glut, Roy Thomas and John Buscema, Wendell was a SHIELD guard in charge of protected the Quantum Bands that were recovered from the Crusader (a Eternal believing he was the WWII Marvel Boy). The base was invaded by AIM to steal the bands but Wendell put them on to prevent them from falling into their hands. Taking the name and similar costume of Marvel Boy, he soon joined the SHIELD Super-Soldiers and was trained and worked with Captain America. He would later change his name to Marvel Man before going onto call himself Quasar, after a battle with the Hulk. He soon took the position of head of security at Project PEGASUS but soon resigned once the NTH Man attacked the facility.
He would soon travel to Uranus where he encountered Deathurge and Eon. Eon appointed him the Protector of the Universe, a role once filled by Captain Mar-Vell. He would defeat Deathurge. He would teleport back to Earth and would battle the Living Laser as well as assisting the Avengers. He would later battle the Squadron Supreme. He would later battle the Cosmic Assassin, Maelstrom and well as helping deliver Eon’s daughter Epoch. During the Kree/Shi’Ar war, he would side with Cap against killing the Supreme Intelligence. He was believed killed in the Infinity War.
He would of course return but would eventually be charged with murder. He cleared his name and answered the Avengers call for him, which saw him being transported to a medieval world. Back in space, he discovered the body of Jack of Hearts and assembled a team of Avengers to prevent the universe from being destroyed. While this team was away, the Council of world had turned the Earth into a prison planet. The team would attack the space stations but the Kree had released Ego onto the planet, hoping it would take over the planet. Quasar absorbed Ego and had to leave Earth to insure that the living planet wouldn’t escaped. He would take the position of the Avengers orbital guard, monitoring any treat to the planet from an Avengers Satelite.
After being freed from Ego by some unknown means, He was later killed by Annihilus, who took his bands. They would soon be given to Phylla-Vell who took on the name Quasar. He would later be revived as a being of Quantum energy and after the death of Phylla, he retook the bands and his original body. After the battle with the Cancerverse, he would joined the Annihilators. He soon began losing control of the bands and eventually search for a successor. He found one in the form of SHIELD agent, Avril Kincaid. However she would soon die during the Chitauri invasion during the Secret War. He became Quasar once again and alongside a revived Avril, joined the Guardians.
Quasar is a popular character that has been requested for quite a while, either as the Classic or Annihilation costume. He did receive a Marvel Universe but it would be years later that he received a Marvel Legends version as part of Walgreens Cosmic Marvel Legends.
Classic
Recommend Figure: Hasbro Walgreens’ Exclusive Marvel Legends – Quasar
- Background:
- This is probably Quasars most famous costume. It is what he wore through out most of his tenure in the 80’s to 90′ only changing when the Cosmic side of Marvel was relaunched in the Annihilation event. His most famous design is the star patterns on his cape.
- Why you need it for your collection?:
- Quasar is a character that can be used for many collections, the most obvious being the Avengers and Cosmic. He is also needed for the Avenger Infinity team, Annihilators and Guardians of the Galaxy. He can also be used for Captain America, F4 and others as he is usually a guest character in them.
- Does it need a remake?:
- No.
