While Green Goblin has done many horribly things to Spider-man, very few would argue that Doc Ock is up there as Spidey’s greatest foe. Introduced in Amazing Spider-Man #(1963) by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Otto Octavius was a nuclear scientist, who had created a set of robotic tentacles, which earned him the nickname Dr. Octopus. One days while working, he was involved in an explosion which cause his tentacles to fuse with his body and caused him to go crazy. He took to the street trying to steal money to fund his research. He was actually the very first villain to defeat Spider-man, in his first encounter only to lose to him in the same issue.  After several defeats, he called on other villains and help create the Sinister Six, which he became the de-facto leader of the group.

He would later set up an underwater base. From there, he tried to make a play for control of the criminal underground. He hid his identity and began using other criminals as the Master Planner. Spider-man eventually tracked him down, which lead to an underground battle and the famous Spider-man scene. In another battle with Spidey, he knocked over a chimney which resulted in the death of George Stacy. After trying again to take over the underworld against Hammerhead, he learnt that Aunt May had inherited a nuclear power plant and went about making her fall in love with him. They were to be wed until Spider-man stopped it. He was eventually killed by Kaine but was later resurrected by Lady Octopus, the Stunner and the Hand.

After years of fighting Spider-man, Doc Ock realized that he was dying due to constantly been struck by Spidey (at least that what he believed). In an attempt to be remembered, he assembled a new Sinister Six and went about getting revenge on people who he believed had wronged him, like the F4 and Tony Stark. He then pretended to have created a new source of energy from solar power but this turned out to be a ploy to destroy the Earth along with him. Spidey defeated him and he was sent to prison. At some point during that time, he had swapped his mind with Peter and took over his body. After witnessing Peter’s “death” in his own body, he became the Superior Spider-man. He was later involved in the Spider-verse only to be sent back without his memories of the event. After a battle with Green Goblin, he gave Peter his body back. However, he had uploaded his mind to the Living Brain. Using this, he transferred his mind into a clone body of himself, created by Ben Reilly’s Jackal. However during the events of Clone Conspiracy, he transferred his mind to a clone body of Peter/Ben/Kaine. He left New York and joined up with Hydra to become the Superior Octopus.

As one of Spider-man’s greatest foe, Doc Ock has had plenty of figures. He received a number in Toybiz’s Spider-man classic in his classic version, one of which was re-release as part of the Marvel Legends Spider-man VS the Sinister Six Box set. Toybiz also released another figure as part of their series 8 of Marvel Legends. Because that one was considered hard to top, Hasbro has only recently decided to redo that version in their SP//DR wave (which ironically also has Kaine in it). When Hasbro launched their Spider-man subline of ML, they release a version of the Superior Spider-man in the Ultimate Green Goblin wave as well as a Superior Venom in their Rhino wave. Hasbro has also announced a Superior Octopus figure for a yet unknown baf Spider-man wave.

Have

Classic

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends Spider-man SP//DR wave – Dr. Octopus OR Amazon Exclusive Spider-man: Beyond Amazing 60th Anniversary 2-pack – Dr. Octopus with Silk

  • Background:
    • This is Doc Ock’s most frequent costume. Like most Classic costumes, it has been changed slightly with each artist. The yellow collar piece might be missing or the yellow parts might be black. It also should be noted that Doc Ock is more of a chubby character but during the 80’s and 90’s he was given a more muscular look which he would soon lose.
  • Why you need it for your collection?:
    • If you are any Spidey collector, then you have to have a Doc Ock. He is one of the top 3 villains that you need in your collection, the others being of course Green Goblin and Venom. As for which version you get, I personally think that the body on the newer Hasbro version has a better body but the tentacles are not bendable. The Toybiz version body is pretty bad (with some joints that are horrible) but the tentacles are bendable. It’s up to you which one you want.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No. Just getting remade.

Superior Spider-man

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends Amazing Spider-man 2 Ultimate Green Goblin wave Superior Spider-man

  • Background:
    • This is actually Doc Ock’s second version of the Superior Spider-man suit, the first being his version of the classic design. He would later add gauntlets and spider legs. It was also the version he used in the Spider-verse and the base for his Superior Octopus costume.
  • Why you need it for your collection?:
    • This is a nice figure and I would say get it if you are a fan of the story. It is also essential if you are building a Spider-verse as he was a big part of it. If you are not then this can be skipped.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • Normally I would say no, given that it is not a bad figure. However I would like Hasbro to redo this with the gauntlets and Spider legs. Even more so now that Hasbro has done the legs for the MCU Iron Spider.

Superior Venom

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends Spider-man Rhino wave – Superior Venom

  • Background:
    • When Ock encountered Agent Venom, he went about separating the Symbiote from Flash and giving him some new legs. The Symbiote escape and thinking Ock was Peter, he tried to bond with Ock to create this version.
  • Why you need it for your collection?:
    • (Repost from the Venom page) Okay guys. I cannot justify getting this. It was only seen for 2 issues. The figure itself is good but it was so obscure that even I can’t get excited for it. Get it for the Rhino part and if you have to, for your Venom collection.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No.

Superior Octopus

Recommend Figure:  Hasbro Marvel Legends Spider-man ? Wave Superior Octopus

  • Background:
    • After installing his mind into a clone body of Parker, he escaped to one of his old hideouts only to discovered that it had been taken over by Hydra, under the leadership of Armin Zola. Zola offered Ock a place in Hydra and Ock used Hydra’s tech to create this suit and become the Superior Octopus. He wore this during the Secret Empire and up until he returned to being Superior Spider-man.
  • Why you need it for your collection?:
    • If you are a fan of Doc Ock then this will make a nice addition to that collection. It also needed to create the Hydra Avengers and recreate the scenes in Ock’s Superior Octopus series. But if you are a one and done person then this can be skipped.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No.

Needs

Below you will find a gallery of suits that still need to be made. I have included what I think are the possibilities of them being made. Note that these are my personal opinions and not fact. Please let me know if I have missed anything.
