Soldier. Samurai. Leader. It’s time to talk about James “Logan” Howlett, AKA Wolverine.
To understand where Wolverine came from you first have to have a little lesson on the X-men. The X-men had been cancelled for a few years with their books being reprints of previous stories. Marvel decided to relaunch the series as a new team with characters from around the world. Knowing this was happening, Roy Thomas asked the writer, Len Wein to create a Canadian superhero. Thus in Incredible Hulk #180, the team introduced Wolverine in the very last panel of the issue with the next issue having him fighting both the Hulk and the Wendigo. A few months later in Giant-Size X-men #1, Wolverine was asked by Professor X to join his new team of X-men to save the original team. The rest as the say is history. Wolverine’s gruff exterior proved popular with the readers and he became the one of the most popular character at the time. He eventually was given his own mini-series (which “The Wolverine” movie is loosely based one) and then an ongoing series.
As to the toy part, while he has had quite a few figures, many being remakes of existing costumes, he has nowhere near the amount of figures that Spider-man or Iron Man has. But he is actually in third for the number of figure in ML. Throughout their time, TB nearly introduced him into most of their wave, but not all. For Hasbro, they seem to have a thing for Wolverine being part of a X-men based wave.
Have
Civilian

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends Ultimate Riders Wave 2 Logan OR Fan Channel Exclusive 80th Anniversary
- Background:
- Unlike most superheroes out there, Wolverine is one of the few who prefers working in his civilian clothes rather then his costumes. This was alluded to when Xavier switched the X-men costume the black leather costume and again when Cyclops made the team return to costumes. However during most of his solo adventures he prefers to wear normal clothes but the white vest (“wife beater”) and jeans (and sometimes a hat) are usually his signature outfit.
- Why you need it for your collection?:
- While Toybiz did release a civilian version in their Legendary Riders series with a bike, it was only an alright figure. Hasbro’s one is pretty much the one that people have asked for. Again this is up to you whether you want the Wife-Beater version or a Leather jacket version. The Bike on the TB version is more detailed but I prefer the Hasbro one. Or if you don’t want the bike and just want the figure for cheaper, then get the 80th anniversary set with the Cowboy hat.
- Does it need a remake?:
- No.
Weapon X

Recommend Figure: Hasrbo Marvel Legends X-men Caliban Wave Weapon X
- Background:
- As part of Team X, Logan was abducted by the Weapon Plus program. They experimented on him and bonded his skeleton with Adamantium. They used a helmet to try and brainwashed Logan into being their puppet for special operations, making him into a wild animal like man. However, Logan eventually broke free and attacked his capturers before escaping into the woods.
- Why you need it for your collection?:
- While iconic and the story has been repeated several times, it is not absolutely essential. As for which one you should get, it’s really up to you. The TB one has the extra tank that it came with but the Hasbro one is more comic book accurate and will more then likely come with a BAF piece. Also the newer Hasbro one will fit in more with your current collection and will be more readily available unlike the TB one which is harder to get.
- Does it need a remake?:
- No, just got remade.
First Appearance

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends 80th Anniversary 2-pack First Appearance Wolverine with Hulk
- Background:
- After leaving the Weapon Plus facility, he happened upon and attacked James and Heather Hudson. After they subdued him, they took him in and took care of him until he was back to being more human. James Hudson was a member of the Canadians governments self-defence Department K. He believed that Wolverine could be Canada’s patriotic hero just like Captain America. One of his first mission was to fight the Hulk. He appeared in this costume in the last panel.
- Why you need it for your collection?:
- Like all of the FA version, I think this should be got. If by any chance you get the Toy Biz version mint, then you also get one of best figure of Sabretooth. However I would recommend getting the Hasbro 80th anniversary set as you also get the best looking hulk yet.
- Does it need a remake?:
- No. Just got remade
Classic Tiger Stripe

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends X-men Apocalypse wave Wolverine OR Fan Channel Exclusive Love Triangle Set Wolverine With Jean Grey and Cyclops
- Background:
- It didn’t take Wolverine long to get a new costume as in his second appearance he had changed his costume to this. Made famous during the 90’s cartoon, it is the costume that Logan has worn for most of his career. Many of his other costumes are essentially based on this one. As for the bone claw versions, shortly after Magneto ripped the adamantium from his bones, Logan turned savage and the Onslaught saga, Wolverine returned to his classic Tiger Stripe costume while still having the bone claws as well. It was later that he was kidnapped by Apocalypse that he had his adamantium returned and he was brainwashed into Death.
- Why you need it for your collection?:
- Yes. This is Wolverine most iconic costume and is absolutely need for your collection. Either Hasbro versions are great but I recommend getting the Love Triangle version as you get more for him as well as 2 other figures.
- Does it need a remake?:
- No, just got remake.
Patch

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends Ultimate Riders Wave 2 Logan (Patch Swappable head)
- Background:
- Wolverine first solo mini-series comic was a huge hit so Marvel launched his first ongoing comic soon after. At the time all the X-men were believed dead (really hiding out in Australia’s outback) and Logan was spending this time in Madripoor. To “hide” his identity, he wore an eye-patch and went under the name Patch.
- Why you need it for your collection?:
- For many Wolverine fans, this is a huge part of his history as it was one of his earliest and longest adventures. It was nice of Hasbro to include this in the Ultimate Riders version as a swappable head. If you are getting the set then this is included. If not then it can be skipped.
- Does it need a remake?:
- No. Maybe on the Old Man Logan build as a exclusive but otherwise no.
Patch Night missions

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends X-men Vintage Wave 1 Wolverine
- Background:
- When Wolverine was living in Madripoor as Patch, he used to go on secret missions, usually at night. He wore this costume during these in order to make people thing himself and Patch were 2 different people. It is also the costume he wore when he first fought Silver Samurai.
- Why you need it for your collection?:
- While this won’t be for every one, this is the costume he wore when he first fought Silver Samurai who is in the same wave. It was the same when they release Silver Samurai in the MU line as a 2 pack with this version. Wolverine fans might want this or people who like recreating fight scenes but otherwise can be skipped.
- Does it need a remake?:
- No.
Brown and Tan

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends Vintage Wave 1 Wolverine
- Background:
- The second most Iconic costume which Wolverine wore for quite a while was inspired by the time he wore the Shi’Ar guard member Fang’s costume. He wore this all the way up to Jim Lee’s run of the books where he went back to his Tiger Stripe design. He would return to this costume from time to time.
- Why you need it for your collection?:
- Yes. This version of Wolverine is the best Wolverine figure to date. Since neither version comes with a BAF, then I would recommend getting the newer Vintage one since you get an unmasked head and hairy arms, which the other didn’t have.
- Does it need a remake?:
- No the one we got was perfect
Crucified Wolverine

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Amazon Exclusive Marvel Legends Wolverine Box set – Wolverine with Callisto, Cyber, Mastermind and Omega Red
- Background:
- Wolverine is not unbeatable. He does take damage and feels pain more so then any other characters. This was seen when the X-men were based in Australia when they were believe dead. The Reavers captured and beat Wolverine, hanging him on a cross. He was rescued by Jubilee.
- Why you need it for your collection?:
- Unless you want to recreate the scene mentioned above or want a battle damaged Wolverine, then you can skip this one.
- Does it need a remake?:
- No.
Training Uniform

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends X-men Retro wave 2 – Wolverine
- Background:
- After the X-Tinction Agenda, the X-Men all came to be dressed in a single kind of team uniform. The team used them to help Lilandra.
- Why you need it for your collection?:
- If you want to complete Wolverine wardrobe or want to build this iconic version of the team, you will need this. Otherwise skip.
- Does it need a remake?:
- No.
New X-men

Recommend Figure: Toybiz X-men Classics Wolverine
- Background:
- During Grant Morrison hated run of the X-men, the team started wearing leather costumes similar to the first X-men movie.
- Why you need it for your collection?:
- I personally hated Grant Morrison run of the X-men book as I didn’t understand what was going on half the time. Only get this figure if you have to have all Wolverine figures.
- Does it need a remake?:
- No. it is not an important costume.
Astonishing X-men

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends Diamond Exclusive Puck Wave Wolverine
- Background:
- After Xorn destroyed a part of New York, Cyclops decided they needed to make the X-men more media friendly by making them wear costumes again. This is essentially an updated version of his classic costume. The design has been drawn differently by different artists.
- Why you need it for your collection?:
- If you get this version or theTB Apocalypse sries one, then I would recommend picking one up.
- Does it need a remake?:
- No. We have gotten 4 versions of this figure (2 masked and 2 unmasked) so it’s time to move onto another version.
Uncanny X-Force

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends X-force Wendigo wave Uncanny X-force Wolverine
- Background:
- During and after the Messiah Complex Cyclops got Wolverine to create a new black op X-force who wore black and grey/white/silver version of their costumes. Their job as to get at people who would hurt mutants before they did, usually killing them.
- Why you need it for your collection?:
I honestly think you should try and get this version to complete the team, either the SDCC box set that came with Psylocke and Archangel, or the general release version. The only difference between the 2 is the use of grey and silver. With the release of the X-force Wave version, the SDCC and Hit-Monkey wave version can be forgotten about.
- Does it need a remake?:
- No.
Return of Wolverine

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends X-men Bonebreaker – Wolverine
- Background:
- After his death, Wolverine’s body was eventually stolen and used to conduct experiments on. He was eventually revived and for some reason would gain heated claws. He wore a costume similar to his Astonishing X-men version.
- Why you need it for your collection?:
- This is a more modern yet obscure version. Get this if you want the hated claws or have to have every Wolverine.
- Does it need a remake?:
- No.
House of X

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends X-men: House of X Tri-Sentinel (Theta Sentinel) Wave – Wolverine
- Background:
- Like many X-men, Wolverine would appear in House of X with a costume that was similar to an old costume. For Wolverine, this was his Brown and Tan costume, which was updated to this version.
- Why you need it for your collection?:
- If you missed any of the previous versions or just want a more modern costume, then you should get this. It is also for a Wolverine wardrobe collection as well as recreating the House of X Storyline.
- Does it need a remake?:
- No.
