Despite looking the youngest, he is actually the eldest of Mar-Vell’s three children. Introduced in Young Avengers #1 (2005) by Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung, Dorrek VIII is the child of the Kree hero Captain Mar-Vell and the Skrull princess, Anelle, who met during the Kree/Skrull war and had a brief romance. Fearing to the child’s life, the mother sent the baby and his nursemaid to Earth to be raised by his father. However, Mar-Vell had already died of cancer who the nursemaid decided to raise the child as her own, taking on human appearance and the name Mary-Jo Altman and the baby becoming Theodore “Teddy” Rufus. He would be raise without knowledge of his heritage.
He would later be approached by Iron Lad, who requested his aid in battling Kang. Teddy took the name Hulkling because of his green skin form and began dating his teammate Asgardian (later Wiccan). After the defeat of Kang and with the team reforming, his home was soon attacked by the Super-Skrull, who told Teddy he was a Skrull. Super-Skrull later used a device to reveal Teddy’s true form but instead it revealed Teddy’s mother true form. Super-Skrull killed her and kidnapped Teddy. Super-Skrull revealed to Teddy his Skrull and Kree origin and this led to a battle between the Skrull and Kree over Teddy. The fight was settle when it was agreed that Teddy would spend half a year on each home world. However, it was revealed that Super-Skrull had taken Teddy’s place, owning a debt to Teddy’s father. Teddy would remain on Earth and began living with Billy’s family.
Alongside his teammates, Teddy would join Cap’s side in the Civil War and tried to stop the Skrull invasion. He would later help Billy and the team to search for Scarlet Witch. He would later spent some time away from Billy after Wiccan accidently summon an evil parasite to Earth. The couple would later join Sunspot’s New Avengers. While Wiccan was part of the Strikeforce, Teddy was abducted by the Kree and Skrull, who now formed an alliance with Teddy as the leader, taking the name Emperor Hulkling. This alliance worked together with the Avengers and F4 to battle the Cotati, who want to take over the Earth. Afterwards, Teddy and Billy were marrieds and Teddy became the official king of the Kree and Skrulls.
Hulkling, alongside his husband, is one of the most popular member of the Young Avengers but everyone was shocked when Toybiz released a box set for the original team. This was because the team was relatively new to the industry.
Original
Recommend Figure: Toybiz Marvel Legends Young Avengers Box set – Hulkling (with Iron Lad, Patriot and Asgardian)
- Background:
- When the Young Avengers first appeared, they patterned themselves after the four main Avengers. Because of his green skin and massive bulk, Teddy began calling himself Hulkling, a mixture of Hulk and Changling.
- Why you need it for your collection?:
- This is a figure you will need for your Avengers, Young Avengers, Skrull/Kree, Cosmic and Marvel Family collections. However, even when it was released, this set was extremely hard to find and now goes for a minimum of 150. Given his role in Empyre, I think we will get a new version soon.
- Does it need a remake?:
- Yes but maybe not this version.
