Even though she started out as just a female version of Captain Mar-Vell, she has earned her right to be called Captain Marvel. Introduced in Marvel Super-Heroes #13 (1968) by Roy Thomas and Gene Colan, Carol Danvers was the youngest daughter of a military family. Against her father’s wishes she joined the Air Force, excelling in her field. She soon joined Special Operation where she worked with many future heroes including Wolverine, Thing and Nick Fury and fighting Natasha Romanov (future Black Widow) and Sabretooth. She was later assigned to NASA as chief of security. There she met and befriended Mar-Vell. One of Mar-Vell enemies kidnapped Carol. In the ensuing battle, she was hit with a beam that merged her DNA with those of Kree, giving her powers. After quitting, writing a tell-all book against NASA and working in the Daily Bugle, she learnt of her powers and took up the name Ms. Marvel after her friend.

After a few adventures and gaining her classic costume thanks to Wasp, she was invited to join the Avengers, when Henry Gyrich tried to enforce heavy sanctions on the team. During this time, Carol was kidnapped by Marcus who control her mind to force himself on her and give birth to him. Despite this vile treatment the Avengers allowed Carol to leave with Marcus for Limbo. She eventually found her way home but was attacked by Rogue who absorbed her powers and memories. She was saved by Spider-Woman she was brought the X-mansion and learnt that she hadn’t her powers. The Avengers went to talk to her, but she berated them for allowing her to be taken by Marcus. She would remain in the X-mansion until they allowed Rogue to join, and she punched Rogue into the stratosphere, regaining her powers.

An encounter with the Brood saw her becoming more powerful and she took on the name Binary. She went into space and joined the Starjammers. This power died down and she eventually return to Earth, returning to her classic costume but taking on the name Warbird and rejoined the Avengers. However, all of these experiences cause her to have a severe bout of alcoholism. Iron Man eventually saw this and sponsored her recovery. During this she remained a member of the Avenger on and off, being there during the Disassemble story. While she did turn down Cap offer for joining the New Avengers, she did work beside them. After seeing what a hero she should become during House of M, she began working to become the same in the main universe. She joined Iron Man side in the Civil War and was made the leader of the Mighty Avengers.

After the Secret Invasion she joined the New Avengers. During Siege she was bonded to the Venom symbiote for a bit. After encountering a resurrected Mar-Vell and seeing him sacrificing his life to save the Kree home world during AVX, she took up the mantle of Captain Marvel. She later began working with the Guardians of the Galaxy. After the Secret War, she helped set up 2 teams, a new Alpha Flight, and the Ultimates. She was also one of the female heroes to form A-Force. When a precog Inhuman was brought to her, she began using him to arrest people before they committed a crime. This led to the second Civil War, which saw her leading one side and Iron Man leading another. She then tried to erect a protective shield around Earth but was eventually trapped in space during the Secret Empire saga but was eventually able to return to Earth.

While she has been a fan favorite for many years and a long time Avenger, it wasn’t until the mention House of M storyline that she become more prominent character in the Marvel Universe. She has had a few figures over the years. Toybiz released her (as Warbird) as part of their store exclusive Giant Man series. She later saw a Captain Marvel version released as part of Hasbro’s Odin wave. She later got a Ms. Marvel (classic version) as part of an exclusive box set with Radioactive man and Ultimate Cap. The Captain Marvel figure was repainted into the Time Runs Out version as part of Marvel’s Online subscription service.
