“Realizing mutants were the next step in human evolution, Professor Charles Xavier gathered gifted teenagers to be his first class of students. His goal is to protect and educate the next generation of homo superior, while pursuing a dream of harmony.“
Introduced in X-Men #1 (1963) by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, with the raise of a new race of humans and an encounter with the Shadow King, Charles Xavier (Professor X) realize that mutants will be prosecuted against and that other mutants will use their powers against humans. So, he wanted to build a team to prevent a war between the races. He recruited Cyclops, Iceman, Angel, Beast and his first student, Jean Grey (Marvel Girl), in that order, to become the founding members of the X-men.
In the sixties, they only had four recruits, starting with Mimic, who copied the founding members’ powers and forced the team to accept him as a member but was soon kicked out. Former villain Changeling, realized he was dying of cancer and wanted to make amends for his crimes. He approached Xavier, who needed to go into hiding to prepare for the invasion of the Z’nox. Using his shape-shifting powers, Changeling took Professor X’s place in the X-men and died in battle, making the X-men believe Xavier was dead. It was later revealed that Xavier was alive. The X-men then rescued Lorna Dane from Mesmero, who made her believe Magneto was her father (which later turned out to be true, but this was never brought up how he knew). She joined the X-men soon after as Polaris. Scott eventually reunited with his brother who was being used by the Living Monolith as a power source. After a few adventures, he would join the team as Havok. Then came the soft cancellation of the comic, with the series being nothing but reprints until……
Now before we get onto that retcon, we should talk what happened in real life with the X-men. At the end of the 60’s the X-men comics were essentially cancelled. The comics were still on the shelf and the issues number kept on increasing, but they were all reprints with improved art. The team would continue to appear in other books but only as guest characters. So, in the mid 70’s it was decided to bring the X-men back. However, instead of bringing back the original team, they decided to make something different. They decided to make this new team a group that has members from around the world, not just from America. It has characters, from Ireland, Canada, Germany, Russia, Africa, and Japan. Not only that but they were much older characters than the previous team, with the majority of them being adults instead of teens. This proved to be a major success and relaunched the X-men brand into the series we know today. So, if anyone ever says the X-men shouldn’t be woke, you tell them it was being woke that saved them.
Back to the new members, starting with a retcon from 2006. When the original X-men were captured by Krakoa, Xavier went to Moira MacTaggart, who was training four young mutants. He rushed these young mutants into training to rescue the original team. These were Sway, Petra, Darwin, and Kid Vulcan, who was discovered to be Scott and Alex Summer’s younger brother. They were sent to rescue the team, but it ended in disaster when Petra and Sway were killed, and Darwin and Vulcan were sent into space with Krakoa. Cyclops managed to escape and had his memory of this erased from his mind. So, Xavier decided to assemble a more mature team of mutant from around the world, Nightcrawler from Germany, Wolverine from Canada, former enemy Banshee from Ireland, Storm from Africa, former enemy Sunfire from Japan, Colossus from Russia, and Thunderbird from America, with Cyclops leading this team. After they rescued the original team, all but Cyclops from the original team left and Sunfire returned to Japan. Thunderbird would die in the next issue. After that there wouldn’t be a new member until much later, when the Phoenix Force made a copy of Jean Grey, hiding her in a cocoon in Hudson Bay and replaced her on the team as Phoenix, though this wouldn’t be discovered until much, much later.
Into the 80’s now and during the Dark Phoenix saga, the team would try and recruit two more members, Kitty Pryde and Alison Blaire but the latter refused. (This was because of a whole IRL situation with the character.) After the saga, Kitty would join the X-men as Sprite. Initially appearing in a story that Kitty told to some kids, Kitty would encounter Lockheed in a Brood ship and took the mini purple dragon home. Having absorbed Carol Danvers powers and memories, former Brotherhood member Rogue went to the X-men for help and ended up joining the team much to the team’s dismay. Scott and Jean’s possible daughter, Rachel, came from the Days of Future’s Past timeline and joined the X-men as Phoenix. When Xavier was injured and had to go to space to receive treatment, he left the X-men and New Mutants in Magneto care. After being rescued by the Morlocks following some Mojo manipulations, Psylocke was rescued by the X-men along with the surviving Morlock during the Morlock Massacre. After helping Wolverine beat Sabretooth, she was welcomed into the team. After being rescued by the X-men when she was controlled by Malice, Dazzler joined the team and her later husband Longshot, found himself trapped on earth and finding a place on the team.
When the X-men were believed killed following the Fall of Mutants arc, Moira MacTaggart recruited a number of people as part of her team, which became known as the Muir Island X-men. She recruit Tom Corsi, Sharon Friedlander, Amanda Sefton, Alysande “Sandy” Stuart, Sunder and her son, Legion. The X-men were revealed to be alive later but were sent to the Austrailian Outback. They would eventually return to the state where Forge would join the team and after helping rescue Wolverine from the Reavers, Jubilee would join the team.
We head into the 90’s and this is where the X-men really hit their stride and popularity. Having found a child-form of Storm, Gambit brought her back to the X-mansion where he would remain, joining the team. Over on the Muir Island team, Multiple Man and Siryn would join the team, having both been staying at Moira’s research center with Strong Guy joining soon after before the team was eventually broken up. Following the criminal Trevor Fitzroy back in time, the cop Bishop arrive in the present and was trapped. He met his childhood heroes, the X-men, and would join the team. After some mind-swapping stuff, Revanche would travel to the X-mansion in Betsy’s body, to try and convince them that she was the real Betsy. She would remain with the team until she was infected by the Legacy Virus and her lover, Matsu’o, killed her in mercy.
After the universe was restored following Age of Apocalypse, Cannonball “graduated” from the X-Force to join the X-men but felt unworthy of the role so soon returned to the X-force. It was later revealed that Dark Beast had escaped the AOA universe, kidnapped Beast and took his place on the team. When Onslaught appeared and it appeared to have a similarity of Magneto, the team went searching for Magneto, only to find a younger version of him, named Joseph. He would joined the team to fight Onslaught, only to later be revealed that he was a clone of the real Magneto. Following Operation: Zero Tolerance, Dr. Cecilia Reyes, Marrow and Maggot were recruited into the team. Each eventually left for various reasons. On a trip into space, the team were put to sleep and Wolverine was replace with an Unnamed Skrull. This cause Xavier to appeared become paranoid. He because enforcing harsh training in an effort to find if there was any more Skrulls in the team This pushed the team away with the majority of them leaving except “Wolverine”. He called back Cyclops and Jean Grey, who were retired at the time, and when a young girl named Nina teleported into the mansion for help, Cyclops recruited Cable and X-man into the team.
After the turn of the century and after escaping Bastion and his Prime Sentinels, Neal Shaara traveled to the states for help and joined the team as the third Thunderbird. It was later revealed that Sebastian Shaw’s secretary, Tessa, was actually a spy for Xavier in the Hellfire Club. She would join the team as Sage. Not long after that the team split into two, with one team, the Storm led X-Treme X-men, leaving the mansion to search for Destiny’s Dairies. The Westchester team had to deal with Magneto, who at the time was the leader of Genosha, declaring war on the world. Xavier was kidnapped and Cyclops and Wolverine sneaking into Genosha. Jean was left with no choice but to recruit a new team of X-men, with her using her powers to brainwash former Acolyte, Frenzy, and recruit Northstar, Wraith, Omerta, and Sunfire’s sister, Sunprye. Once Magneto was defeated, they all left the team. However, the defeat of Magneto left Genosha vulnerable to attacks from Cassandra Nova’s Monster Sentinel, causing a massacre for the majority of the citizens. Only Emma Frost survived thanks to her diamond form manifesting for the first time. She was rescued by the X-men and after it was believed she had killed Cassandra Nova, she joined the team.
However, it turned out that Cassandra had swapped mind with Xavier and had taken control of her brother’s body, outing him as a mutant and opening up the school for all mutants. The New team rescued a Chinese mutant, Xorn. On the Uncanny team, Chamber joined the team with Stacy X joining not soon after. Over in Australia, the X-treme Team welcome Lifeguard and Slipstream. Husk would join the Uncanny team and Juggernaut, having lost the powers of Cyttorak, wanted to make amends with his brother and became a hero. He asked his brother to join the team.
After M-Day, which saw over 90% of mutant population lose their powers, Xorn’s brother, Shen Xorn, joined the team in penance for his brother’s crime. Mystique joined the team as Xavier’s agent while Warpath would join the Uncanny team. Rogue was put in charge of her own team and brought a few villains into the team being controlled by collars. These included Lady Mastermind, Sabretooth and Omega Sentinel. Over on the Astonishing team, the team was kidnapped by Ord and brought to his planet. This included Armor, who was given one of Kitty’s old suit by Wolverine and made a member. Former Starjammer, Hepzibah, joined the team after the death of Corsair by his son, Vulcan and Caliban would join the team soon after.
Eventually, the X-men moved to San Francisco, where Pixie joined the team. Former New Mutants member Karma would joined the team with Moonstar, Sunspot and Magma joining the team after they rescued the Young X-men from Donald Pierce and began training them. Boom-Boom would join soon after with Northstar’s twin sister, Aurora, would join the team during the Secret Invasion. Beast would recruit a number of mutant scientist to try and solve the mutant depowering, with Dr. Nemesis, Madison Jeffries, Dr. Yuriko Takiguchi and Dr. Kavita Rao joining his X-Club. Domino would join the main and Cyclops would sanction a new New Mutant team in which a resurrected Magik joining the team. After helping Xavier return to life, Danger and Ariel would join the team. Namor would work with Emma to trick Norman Osborn into believing they had betrayed the X-men to join his Dark X-men team. After this was found out, they invited Cloak and Dagger to join the team.
Moving into the 2010’s, Cypher and his alien pal, Warlock, would join the X-men sanctioned New Mutants time. Helping Wolverine and Psylocke, Fanotmex and his sentient nervous system, EVA, would join the team while Laura Kinney, X-23, would help her father’s team and became a member. Hope Summers would return from the future and join the X-tinction team. Following Cyclops and Wolverine fight that split the team in two (again), Wolverine re-opened the Westchester School. One of the students was the Shi’Ar’s Gladiator’s son, Kid Gladiator and his guardian, Warbird (Ava’Dara Naganandini) would join the X-men team, and the resurrected Blink would join Wolverine’s side of the X-men.
Following the war against the Avengers, Firestar became a teacher in Wolverine’s school while M/Monet would join Storm’s all female team of X-men. At some point, Forget Me Not, joined but we don’t know for how long he has been a member, so I’m putting it here. During Axis, Evan Sabahnur, later Genesis, would take on the form of Apocalypse and would lead an inverted X-men team in an attack against the now evil Avengers. Following the Secret Wars and the time skip, Cerebra would join the team when Kitty and Storm had to place the school in the Limbo dimension. Alchemy, one of the students of Cyclops when he had gone renegade, had joined the team at some point but soon died of M-Pox, a disease cause by mutant coming in contact with the Terrigen Cloud. Oya, now Temper, and one of Nightcrawler’s Bamf’s, Pickles, would join the Time-Displaced X-men team.
The Secret Wars would see many people from other universes being sent to the Prime universe. Following a mutant signature that they believed was the Prime universe Wolverine, who had “died” at the time, the Extraordinary team came upon OId Man Logan. Lucid, a young girl who was dying of M-Pox, was given honorary status as she died her heroes’, Storm’s, arm. Jimmy Hudson, the Ultimate Universe’s Wolverine’s son, would be brainwashed by Miss Sinister into attacking the time-displaced X-men (the Blue team) but was rescues by Jean Grey and joined them. After the X-men were attacked and defeated the Hex-men, Bloodstorm, would join the Blue team. Over in the Kitty Pryde led Gold team, Ink would join to help against an alien invasion from the Negative Zone.
Following her resurrection, Jean Grey set up a new Red Team, getting Honey Badger, Gentle and Trinary to join. Meanwhile, Mesmero’s Brotherhood attacked anti-mutant activist Lydia Nance. However, one of their members, Pyro (Lasker) betrayed the Brotherhood and sold them out to the X-men. He would join the Gold team soon after beginning a relationship with Iceman. The Blue team changed when Polaris began leading the team with Daken and Gazing Nightshade joining under her leadership. Following the disassmebling of all the X-men team and the resurrection of Cyclops, Wolfsbane would join the team.
We head into the 2020’s and the Krakoa era of the X-men. After being resurrected following their attempted death of the Vault, Synch would join the team alongside a duplicate of Laura Kinney, Wolverine (Kinney). (The real version of revealed to be alive and now there are 2 Laura). Following the discovery of Arrako, Abigail Brand formed her own team of X-men Red with Mentallo, Random and Manifold joining her unit. During the first Hellfire Gala, Prodigy (Alleyne) was voted into the team. Following the discovery that Sinister had corrupted the resurrection protocol, the X-men welcome Rasputin IV into the team while Ms. Marvel (Khan) was resurrected following her death and confirmed to be the first mutant and Inhuman hybrid with her and Woofer joining the team. Meanwhile, Goblin Queen (Pryor) and Havok forming a new Dark X-men team in Limbo with Zero (Uedo), Emplate, Aazazel and later Feint joining the team. Following the fall of Krakoa, Kid Omega would join Cyclops’ team.
