  • Origin: Mutant
  • Universe: Marvel Prime Universe (Earth-616)

He may have an appearance of a blue devil, but you won’t find a more devout catholic in all of Marvel. Introduced in Giant-Size X-Men #1(1975) by Len Wein and Dave Cockrum (who actually wanted him to be in DC’s Legion of Superheroes before he went to Marvel), the German mutant is the son of Mystique and the demon Azazel. When he was born, he was discovered to be a mutant, which led an angry mob to chase Mystique. She eventually passed out and he was sent floating down a river to be rescued by traveling circus, who raised the child and gave him the name Kurt. He began performing for the circus but after a while had to escape, when the ring master wanted to sell him off. He escaped to a church of Father Wagner who took the child in. He thought the child how to read and write and helped Kurt become a devout Catholic. Kurt eventually took the priest surname. Eventually his foster brother tried to kill him but was killed. A mob accused him of being a devil and attacked. He was saved by Professor X and he was asked to join the X-men to rescue the original team.

He would become a core member of the team, becoming best friends with Wolverine, playing off his gruff demeanor. He even became team leader when both Cyclops and Storm left. When the Marauder massacred the Morlocks, he was badly beaten and left in a coma. He was sent to Muir Island for recovery and believed the X-men were dead when he awoke. He would go onto to help form Excalibur with Shadowcat, Rachel Grey, Captain Britain and Meggan, becoming the teams leader. He would eventually learn of who he mother was. Shortly after Colossus joined the team, it disbanded and Kurt, alongside Colossus and Shadowcat, returned to the state and rejoined the X-men. He then took a leave of absence in order to try and become a priest after the death of Colossus.

He eventually learnt the truth of who his father was and that he had many siblings, many with similar teleporting powers. After the team moved to San Fransico and eventually Utopia, Hope Summer returned to the present but was been chased by Bastion. Kurt helped Hope by teleporting her across the country but Bastion eventually caught up and killed Nightcrawler. He was cremated by the team and his soul would be sent to Heaven. His soul would eventually guide his friend, Wolverine when he was sent to hell. He would later summon the X-men to Heaven to help defeat his father but was forced to sarcificed his reward of Paradise to defeat his father and returned to the living. He would rejoin the X-men and eventually join the resurrected (and older) Jean Grey on her red team.

Nightcrawler is a strong fan favorite character with many people wanting more of him in figure form. Unfortunately he hasn’t had many figure over the years, only one from both Toybiz and Hasbro in Marvel Legends. (According to rumours, this is became one of his creator’s family still gets royalty for every merchandise sold).

    • For any X-men fan, this is an absolute must for any X-men fans. He is a core part of the X-men and is needed to many versions of the team, especially the Giant-Size X-men team.
