He is the first X-man. Introduced in X-Men #1 (September, 1963) by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Scott and his brother, Alex, were on a plane trip with their parents when they were attacked by a Shi’Ar spacecraft. With only one parachute, Scott’s mother tied wrapped it wonder her children and pushed them out of the plane. They survived but Scott suffered a head trauma that would effect his powers years later. After being sent to an orphanage, Alex was adopted but Scott subjected to various events, planned out by Mr. Sinister, which eventually led him to come under the influence of criminal Jack O’Diamonds. He was eventually rescued by Prof. X and taken to his mansion where he train him in the use of his power, becoming the first member of the X-men.

Cyclops would lead the X-men for longer then anyone. He even was the only original member of the team to remain after they were rescued from Krakoa. He began a life long romance with Jean Grey. However, after she was killed during the Dark Phoenix saga, he left the team in grief. He went to his grandparent’s place in Alaska where he met Madelyne Pryor, a woman who looked exactly like Jean Grey. They fell in love and even had a child (who would become Cable). But when it was discovered that Jean was still alive, he abandoned his wife and child. He joined up with the other original X-men to form the original X-Factor. Madelyne was eventually revealed to be a clone of Jean, made by Mr. Sinister and tried to sacrifice their child to demons, becoming the Goblin Queen. After her death, Cyclops became a better father to Nathan but the child was kidnapped by servants of Apocalypse and infected with a techno-virus. Cyclops was approached by Clan Askani, who took the child to the future to train him to control his powers and find a cure. They also allowed Scott and Jean’s consciences to be set into the future to raise the child.

The couple eventually returned to the X-men, with Cyclops leading one team and Storm leading another. He eventually married Jean Grey. After a few more adventures, they wanted some time off but eventually returned to the team. Almost right after they returned, Apocalypse kidnapped 12 mutants in an attempt to transfer his mind into X-man’s body but Cyclops sacrificed his life by merging with Apocalypse. He was believed killed but was eventually found alive. After Genosha was destroyed and Emma Frost joined the main team, he began a psychic romance with her. This eventually cause Jean to split with him, just before she was killed by Xorn.

Xavier left the team and Cyclops had to take command of the X-men. After M-Day, he worked with other groups to try and save the mutant race. He eventually took a harder stance when the mutant child, Hope, was born, including setting up a black ops team of the X-force. When the Phoenix came to Earth for Hope, he believed that this was what was needed to restart to mutant race and led the fight against the X-men. He, and four other X-men, eventually gained part of the Phoenix powers but this drove them insane and Cyclops absorbed all the Phoenix powers, killing Xavier. He was defeated and arrest but escaped and lead a renegade team of X-men. After the Secret wars, he was killed by the Terrigen cloud but has since returned to life.

In terms of action figures, if you were to take only the X-men figures, Cyclops is only second to Wolverine, in terms of the amount of figures he has gotten. Toybiz released a Jim Lee Style Cyclops in the original X-men Classic line. They then released his graduated costume in the ML Sentinel Series with a X-Factor II variant. They also release a number of original costume in the second X-men Classic line. When Hasbro took over the license, they released an Astonishing X-men version in the Brood wave. As part of a Diamond distribution exclusive Puck Wave, they released a San Francisco costume (which was supposed to have Phoenix Five variant) and they released a TRU Jubilee wave exclusive Renegade version. As another TRU exclusive, they release a First Appearance version in the All-New X-men box set. After the relaunch of the X-men Legends, they updated the Jim Lee’s Cyclops figure in the Warlock wave. Another TRU Exclusive saw an updated Graduated Cyclops with Dark Phoenix. He is part of the first X-Men Vintage wave in his second X-factor costume. He would receive an Astonishing X-men update as part of the X-men Ch’Od wave.

Have

First Appearance

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Toy-R-Us Exclusive Marvel Legends All-New X-men Box set Cyclops with Marvel Girl, Iceman, Beast and Angel

  • Background:
    • When they first appeared, the X-men all wore similar costume with each having a unique flair to it. For Cyclops, it was the skull cap and vizor. This would become the base for all future costume.
  • Why you need it for your collection?:
    • First appearance costume are always something I recommend getting, just for evolution displays. However, since it was part of the now defunct Toy-R-Us exclusive, the set might be hard to find nowadays and expensive.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No.

Graduated

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Toys-R-Us exclusive Marvel Legends Dark Phoenix 2-pack Cyclops with Dark Phoenix

  • Background:
    • After finding out that Xavier had fake his death and they defeated an alien race, Xavier allowed the team to “graduate” from his school. To celebrate, he gave them each an unique costume, designed by Jean Grey. This is what Cyclops all the way up to when he joined the X-Factor.
  • Why you need it for your collection?:
    • Despite what people tell you, this is what should be considered Cyclops classic costume. It is need for the Giant-Size X-men team was well as recreating many iconic scenes like the Dark Phoenix saga and his fight with Storm in her punk look. Again this falls under the TRU exclusive banner so it might be hard to find.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No.

X-Factor II

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends X-men: Vintage Wave Cyclops

  • Background:
    • This is actually Cyclops’ second X-factor costume, which was given to him by a designer who the team saved when they were pretending to be mutant hunters and after they revealed the truth after beating Apocalypse.
  • Why you need it for your collection?:
    • Cyclops and Archangel are really the only 2 members of the original X-Factor that has gotten figures made in this period’s costume. It really should only be got if you want to recreate X-Factor team or are a Cyclops fan. But the blast effect would make this a must for any customizers.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No.

Jim Lee’s Blue Strike team

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends X-men Warlock Wave Cyclops or Fan Channel Excluisve Love Triangle Cyclops with Wolverine and Jean Grey

  • Background:
    • When the X-Factor members rejoined the X-men, they were placed into 2 teams, one led by Storm and one left by Cyclops. This is also the costume that he wore in the 90’s cartoon (with later a pilot’s jacket).
  • Why you need it for your collection?:
    • With Hasbro focusing on completing the Jim Lee version of the teams, this is an absolute must. It can also be used to recreate the 90’s cartoon line up. However, this was short packed so it was hard to find. If you missed it then you could get the Love Triangle version but that was based on the Animated version and not in the comic but does come with awesome unmasked heads.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No.

Astonishing X-men

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends X-men Ch’Od wave – Astonishing X-men Cyclops

  • Background:
    • After Xorn had destroyed part of New York and Xavier left the team, Cyclops took over running the X-men. One of the first things he did was ditch the leather look (inspired from the movie) and returned the team to costumes, based on older looks.
  • Why you need it for your collection?:
    • If you want to complete your Astonishing X-men team, you will need this. You may want to it for your Cyclops collection.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No.

San Francisco / Utopia

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Diamond Distribution exclusive Marvel Legends X-men Puck wave Cyclops

  • Background:
    • After the mansion was destroyed and the team was disbanded, Cyclops and Emma Frost found themselves in San Francisco. After they rescued the city from being force into a 70’s timelock, the city’s mayor invited the team to become a mutant haven. During the Dark Reign, Cyclops created an artificial island called Utopia. He wore and update version of his Astonishing X-men costume then.
  • Why you need it for your collection?:
    • Unless you were lucky enough to have found this wave in comic store, then the chance of you finding this figure cheap is extremely low. Fun Fact, this was supposed to have a Phoenix Five variant but all variants from that period of ML were mostly cancelled.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No.

Renegade

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends X-men Jubilee wave Cyclops

  • Background:
    • After he went insane with the powers of the Phoenix and killed Xavier, Cyclops was defeated and arrested. He escaped only to discover that he could no longer control his powers. However, he began recruiting new mutants into a renegade team of X-men.
  • Why you need it for your collection?:
    • With Emma Frost and Magik, we now have 3 members of the main part of that team. However, if you missed it in store, chances of finding this are low.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No.

House of M / Power of X

Recommend Figure:  Hasbro Marvel Legends X-men House of X “Tri-Sentinel” (Theta Sentinel) wave – Cyclops

  • Background:
    • During the major storyline, many X-men got new costumes that paid a strong homage to their older costumes. Cyclops became the head of security on Krakoa.
  • Why you need it for your collection?:
    • If you are collecting all the HOX figure, you may want to get this. It is also needed for a Cyclops collection. If none of those interest you, then you can skip if you want.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No.
