While the X-men wanted to live with humans as equals, the Brotherhood wants to show mutant’s superiority over humans, by any means necessary. Introduced in X-Men #4 (1964) by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Magneto began gathering minions to carry out his plans of world domination. His first recruit was a woman known only as Astra, but she would leave the team when Magneto found her methods a step too far. He would later recruit Toad, Mastermind and the twins Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. They would battle the X-men many times and would eventually welcome Blob and Unus into the team. The Savage Land Mutate, Lorelei, would join alongside Alpha, a mutant created by Magneto to be the ultimate mutant. However, Alpha would turn Magneto into a baby and soon after the team would disband, with Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver leaving to join the Avengers. Vanisher was also considered an associate member. Magneto would eventually return to adult form and formed an new team of the Brotherhood with Burner, Lifter, Peeper, Shocker (Darby) and Slither. The team disbanded shortly after fighting Captain America.

The next incarnation of the team was founded by Mystique, who recruited her lover, Destiny, returning member Blob, as well as Pyro and Avalanche. Their first mission saw them trying to assassinate Senator Kelly but were stopped by the X-men. Mystique and Destiny’s adopted daughter, Rogue, was also a member but didn’t see active duty until later. At some point, Blindspot was a member but when she joined is unknown. This team would continue to be active until they were recruited by the government to become the Freedom Force, which is considered a separate team.

After getting a major intelligence boast, Toad formed his own team with Blob and Pyro returning and new recruits Phantazia, Sauron and Masque joining him. Thornn would join the team an issue later. During the Onslaught saga, Dark Beast, pretending to be Beast, formed a new team to serves Onslaught. Most were brainwashed into doing their bidding. He recruited Fatale and used Random as a spy against X-Factor. A brainwashed Havok was sent to attack his former teammates but following the fall of Onslaught and the departure of Dark Beast, he took over the leadership role with Ever, Nate Grey and Aurora joining.

During the Hunt for Xavier arc, where Xavier was missing following the Onslaught saga, Professor X formed his own team of Brotherhood with Blob, Pyro and Toad returning to the team and Mimic and Post joining. Eventually Xavier left to return to X-men and Mystique took on the leadership role turning the team into mercenaries. Mystique reformed the team when she wanted to try and assassinate Senator Kelly again when he was trying to run for President. Avalanche, Blob, Mystique, Post, and Toad returned with a new Crimson Commando, Sabre, Sabretooth and Mastermind (Martinique) joining. They failed when Pyro, who was dying from the Legacy virus, protected Kelly from Post. (Kelly would die soon after when he changed his views on mutants and was killed by a former follower of him).

Mystique formed a third team with Mystique, Avalanche, Blob, and Mastermind (Martinique Jason) returning with Fever Pitch joining. Xorn, drugged up on the substance Kick and believing himself to be Magneto, formed a team with most of his students including Basilisk, Beak, Ernst, Esme Cuckoo, No-Girl and Angel Salvadore. They attacked New York resulting in the deaths of hundreds and Jean Grey. The team would reformed under Exodus. Sabretooth and Avalanche returned with Black Tom Cassidy, Mammomax, Nocturne and Juggernaut joining but Juggernaut turned out to be working for the X-men. However, when the team killed Squid boy, a student who Juggernaut had grown close to, he turned the Brotherhood and defeated them.

The next incarnation was formed by the spirit of Madeline Pryor and consisted of only female members, thus being called the Sisterhood of Mutants. Martinique return, Chimera, Spiral, Lady Deathstrike, Lady Mastermind, Psylocke (Betsy transformed back into her original body and brainwashed into joining) and Empath. The next incarnation was formed by Astra with Magneto’s clone, Joseph, taking the role of Magneto. The rest of the team were basically clones of Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Blob, Toad and Mastermind. The next team was formed my Sabretooth and Daken, in an effort to destroy the Uncanny X-Force. Along with Mystique, They recruited Shadow King, The Skinless Man, Age of Apocalypse’s Blob, and the Omega Clan, three clones of Omega Red consisting of Red II, White and Black.

The next team was formed to discredit the young Time-displaced X-men with them using Lady Mastermind powers to make people think that Mystique, Sabretooth and Blob were the X-men. When they set up base in Madripoor, Silver Samurai (Shingen) joined. Skipping the team that came from the future (cause that is an Alternate universe version not a Prime Universe team), the Sisterhood reformed to try to obtain Arkea, a techno virus created by Sublime. New Members included Typhoid Mary, Enchantress, Arkea and Selene. Mesmero would form is own team of either brainwashed or blackmailed team that consisted of Masque, Magma, Pyro (Lasker), a new Avalanche and Kologoth.

After traveling to the future and seeing destruction coming, Magneto formed another team based on Asteroid M. The team consisted of Briar Raleigh, Toad, Exodus, Unuscione, Marrow, and Elixir. Joseph pretended to be Magneto again and reform his own team with Avalanche, Juggernaut, Pyro, Random and Toad. When a disagreement with SWORD on Arakko, Storm formed her own team with Magneto, Sunspot and Fisher King. After the Genesis War, Genesis formed her own team with her children War and Famine.
