Every director needs an assistant. Introduced in Longshot #1 (1985) by Ann Nocenti and Arthur Adams, Spiral was once a human woman named Rita Wayword, aka Ricochet Rita, a former stuntwoman who befriended Longshot when he arrived on Earth. When Longshot wanted to return to the Mojoverse, she went with him but was captured by Mojo. Both Longshot and Rita had their minds wiped of each other and Rita was genetically and cybernetically transformed into Spiral, Mojo personal assistance. She was sent back in time to kill Longshot and her past self but failed in her effort and left on this universe.

Val Cooper recruited her to join the Freedom Force and would remain with the team for quite a while as well as set up a “Body Shoppe” which she used to modify villains like changing Lady Deathstrike into a cyborg. She also helped swapped Betsy Braddock and Kwannon minds, leading to Betsy having an Asian body. At some point, she was approached by Beast to help solve the loss of all the mutants’ powers following M-Day and would later join Madelyne Pryor’s Sisterhood of Mutants in their attack against the X-men. She was later fired by Mojo and joined Storm’s X-Force team. She was last seen helping Gambit and Rogue against her former master.

Spiral is a popular character for many X-men fans. She has received a few figures over the years her first being part the Target Exclusive Red Hulk wave with a variant. She wouldn’t receive another figure until Hasbro made the second X-men Retro wave.
