They are the Avengers’ greatest adversaries. Introduced in Avengers #6 (1964) by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, following the revival of Steve Rogers into the modern world, Baron Heinrich Zemo swore revenge against his foe. Knowing that Cap was protected by his friends, the Avengers, Zemo gathered villains that each of the Avengers had fought, Melter for Iron man, Radioactive Man for Thor and Black Knight (Garrett) for Giant man. Under his leadership they formed the Masters of Evil and attacked the Avengers….. They failed with only Zemo escaping. Returning to his base in Africa, he was approached by the Enchantress and Excutioner and the three of them worked together to get revenge on the Avengers. They would eventually trick Simon Williams to work with them to get revenge on Iron Man, turning him into Wonder man. He approached the Avengers as a hero, telling them he would die soon. The plan was to capture and betray the Avengers but when he saw that the Avengers did nothing but tried to help him, he betrayed the Masters, dying in the process. This version would split up when Zemo died in a battle with Captain America.

The next team to be formed was was by Ultron, under the guise of the Crimson Cowl, who used Jarvis to give the robot the blueprints to the mansion. He brought back Melter and Radioactive man and recruited Whirlwind, Klaw and Black Knight (Whitman). They nearly succeeded until Black Knight revealed that he joined the team only to betray them to save the Avengers.

The next team was formed by Egghead. In an effort to get revenge against Hank Pym, he recruited Whirlwind, Tiger Shark, Scorpion and Moonstone. They attacked the Avengers and lost. When Hank was put on trail for attacking and betraying the Avengers, Egghead brought back Moonstone, Tiger Shark and recruited Radioactive man, Shocker and Beetle (Jenkins). This team disbanded when it was believed that Egghead was killed when his gun backfired.

Now we move onto the most famous version of this team, the first Baron Helmut Zemo team or as it would become known, The Avengers’ Under Siege team. He recruited Moonstone, Absorbing Man, Titania, Yellowjacket (DeMira), Grey Gargoyle, Screaming Mimi, the Wrecking Crew, Mister Hyde, Goliath (Josten), Fixer, Tiger Shark, Black Mamba and Blackout (Daniels), using Moonstone to control the later. They invaded and took over the Avengers’ Mansion, beat up Jarvis, trounced Hercules, capture Black Knight and so much more. It took the combined might of the Avengers to bring them down, with Cap fighting Zemo in combat.

The next team happened when the superhero community were gathering to deal with the Magus and his army of evil doppelgangers. Dr. Octopus saw this as a chance to sneak into the Avengers mansion to steal some tech. He recruited Absorbing man, Titania, Oddball, Jackhammer, Powderkeg and a reluctant Yellowjacket. They snuck into the mansion expecting it to be empty only to find the Guardians of the Galaxy from the future there. The team would fight but Yellowjacket betrayed the team and join the GOTG. Ock wasn’t bothered as he would summon Shocker, Puff Adder and Gargantua. The two teams would fight but were interrupted by the Magus’ army. The two teams worked together to defeat them and the Masters would turn against Ock.

The next time the Masters reformed was a little different. Under the leadership of Zemo, he gathered Goliath (Josten), Fixer, Screaming Mimi, Beetle (Jenkins) and Moonstone. When the Avengers and Fantastic Four were believed dead following the battle with Onslaught, he saw an opportunity to take their place as the Earth’s heroes. He gave them new identities. He became Citizen V, Goliath became Atlas, Fixer to Techno, Screaming Mimi to Songbird, Beetle to Mach-I and Moonstone to Meteorite. Together they became the Thunderbolts, Earth newest heroes…… or at least that is what it appeared to the public but in truth it was all a ploy to get money and the government’s trust and secrets.

To counteract this new team, Justine Hammer, daughter of Iron Man’s enemy Justin Hammer and under the guise of Crimson Cowl, formed a new separate team of Master with Tiger Shark, Klaw, Cyclone (Freeson), Man-Killer and Flying Tiger. The two groups would fight with the Masters eventually escaping. When Hawkeye became the leader of the T-Bolts and all but Zemo choose to become real heroes, a new Masters formed to carry on Hammer’s plan. These included Boomerang, Cardinal, Joystick, Man-Ape, Constrictor, Eel, Quicksand, Sunstroke, Blackwing, Shockwave, Scorcher, Slyde, Icemaster, Dragonfly, Bison, Aqueduct, Shatterfist, Lodestone and Supercharger. They were eventually defeated and a third team under Hammer’s leadership was formed with Machinesmith, Black Mamba, Hydro-Man, Cyclone, Man-Killer, Gypsy Moth, and Cardinal.

The next time the Masters were formed was when they came under the control of The Shadow Council and were Bagalia, a island nation run criminals, Elite force. Under the command of Max Fury and the field leader of Baron Zemo, it’s numbers included Bi-Beast, Black Talon (Barone), The Brothers Grimm, Carrion (Allen), Constrictor, Crossfire, Daimon Hellstrom, Diablo, Eel (Lavell), Firebrand (Dennison), Griffin, Killer Shrike, Lady Stilt-man, Lascivious, Letha, Madame Masque, Madcap, Pink Pearl, Porcupine (Gocking), Princess Python, Ringer (Kraft), Satannish, Scarecrow, Squid, Tiger Shark, Tinkerer, Vengeance (Kowalski), Whiplash (Vanko) and the Wrecking Crew. There was also a younger team of villains being trained under Constrictor called the Young Masters, but they are their own separate thing. The Avenger would eventually invaded Bagalia with some of the Masters fleeing on a stolen Helicarrier.

When Doc Ock had taken over Spider-man’s body and became the Superior Spider-man, he clashed with another team of Master formed by Lightmaster, which included Absorbing man, Blackout, Mr. Hyde, Titania, Whirlwind and the Wrecking Crew. Ock used a mind-control Sinsiter Six, dubbed the Superior Six, to battle this version of the team as they clashed over Alchemax and a new hero Sun Girl, who was revealed to be Lightmaster’s daughter.

After the mass breakout of the Pleasant Hill prison, Zemo formed another team of Masters, with Klaw, Man-Killer, Tiger Shark, Whiplash (Vanko) and the Wrecking Crew joining him. Under the orders from Hydra, they attacked the Thunderbolts with Atlas, Moonstone and Fixer, defecting to the Masters. This team became working for Captain America, who had been switch with a alternate Hydra version, and aided him in his Hydra’ conquest of America. This team would be part of the larger Army of Evil until the defeat of the evil Steve Rogers. There was a few other Masters like the West Coast Master, formed by Madame Masque and the Multiversal Masters, a team of villains from across the multiverse, but they are considered their own separate thing.
