Every team needs a brute. Introduced in Captain America #337 (1988) by Mark Gruenwald and Tom Morgan, not much is known about Gordon Fraley’s early life before he joined the Serpent Society. He joined the group as a spy for Viper (Madame Hydra) in order for her to take over the group. He was sent with Black Racer, Copperhead, and Fer-de-Lance in order to gain Sidewinder’s attention and would battle Captain America (then known as just the Captain) and his friends before they were defeated. However, this plan worked, and they were invited to the Society.

When Viper made her move, he would battle the rest of the team but would remain with them when King Cobra took over the leadership. He also developed a relationship with Anaconda and would briefly join Doc Ock’s Masters of Evil. After the Society broke up, he would try and bring them back together before making an attack on San Fransico, where he was defeated by the X-men. He would return to the team with Striker’s Viper turned the Society into the Serpent Solution and was defeated by Sam Wilson’s Cap. He was later corrupted by Mephisto, who he was a worshipper of, along with other members but was defeated by Nighthawk.

When Hasbro started making the Serpent Society members, one of the constants wants that people asked for was Puff Adder, as he is a mainstay of the team. Hasbro would release a figure as a BAF for an Avengers wave.

  • Background:
    • Puff Adder costume has rarely been changed over the years, with his colors switching between artists.
  • Why do you need it for your collection?
    • If you have been building the Serpent Society member, you will need this character. Like I said, he is a mainstay of the team and is needed for that display. Other than that, you also may want to get him for your Cap’s villain’s display.
  • Does it need a remake?
    • No.
