They were the first “next generation of X-men”. Introduced in Marvel Graphic Novel #4 (1982) by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod, following the “demise” of the X-men, Xavier fell into depression vowing to never train another team again. That all changed when Moira MacTaggart convinced him that the world need a team to defend humans and mutants from people who would use their powers to do them harm. However, Xavier decided to train them in their powers but not in combat. The first of these recruits was a Vietnamese mutant named Karma, followed by Moira’s adopted daughter, Wolfsbane. An old friend of Xavier, Black Eagle, contacted him about his granddaughter, Dani Moonstar (Moonstar). They went to meet him only to find Black Eagle dead and Dani being hunted by trooper. They rescued her and she reluctantly joined them. Xavier learns that Donald Pierce was after two other mutants, one in Brazil and one in Kentucky. Moira, Karma and Moonstar went to Brazil where they found Sunspot. After his girlfriend was killed by Pierce’s men, he joined the team. Xavier and Wolfsbane went to Kentucky to find Cannonball, who was working for Pierce and captured Xavier and Wolfsbane. When Pierce wanted to kill Xavier and Wolfsbane, Cannonball refused and turned against him. After defeating Pierce, the team would reunited at the mansion and became the first class of New Mutants.

When the X-men were confirmed to be alive, Shadowcat was moved to the New Mutants team because of her age but left shortly after to return to the X-men. The lava controlling mutant, Magma joined the team soon after. After being sent to the Limbo realm and spending years growing up there while it was only a few minutes in the Prime world, Colossus’s younger sister, Illyana, aka Magik, joined the team. Longtime friend of the team, Doug Ramsey, believed he was just a normal human, until it was discovered he was a mutant with the ability to translate and understand any language. He joined the team, now called Cypher, alongside the techno-organic alien known as Warlock.

After Xavier was in badly injured in battle and had to leave with Lilandra to heal, he asked Magneto to take over his as teacher of the New Mutants, which cause many of them to leave the X-mansion and joining the Hellion. the creature known as Bird-Brain, would meet the team and joined soon after. When the team were placed under the care of the X-factor team and folded into the X-terminator team, Skids, Firefist, Rictor and Boom-Boom joined as full members. Once Magneto all but abandoned the team, the team came under the tutelage of Cable and he brought what he thought was Domino with him but was really Copycat. Warpath soon joined before the team was transformed into the X-force (which is considered a separate team as X-force and New Mutants have operated at the same time).

Many years later, the team was reformed and sanctioned by Cyclops in order for them to deal with Legion. After a few mission, X-Man joined the team with Blink joining near the end of this volume. Cable would later form another team, dubbed Newer Mutants, that recruited Shatterstar, Longshot, X-23, Armor and Doop. Later the team reformed to deal with some mysterious incidents involving mutants and recruited Strong Guy. During the Krakoa period, the team began training younger mutants with Chamber and Mondo joining the team. Eventually Escapdee graduated and joined the team with Honey Badger and Cerebella joining to help prevent a new Lethal Legion team from forming.
