They are the next generation of Avengers…. or so they were made to believe. Introduce in Avengers Academy #1 (2010) by Christos N. Gage and Mike McKone, during the Dark Reign storyline, Norman Osborn captured and experimented on a number of children with emerging powers. While many were released following his fall, Hank Pym took the most worrying ones, ones they fear could turn evil. and with the aid of Tigra, Jocasta, Quicksilver, Justice and Speedball, formed the Avengers Academy to train them. The first class consisted of Finesse, Hazmat, Mettle, Strike, Veil and Reptil (his first comic introduced since being created for the Super Hero Squad cartoon.)

They would receive instructions on how to used their powers from their teachers as well as guest speakers including Iron Fist, Valkyrie, Captain America, Dr. Strange, The Protector (Noh-Varr, Spider-man, Hercules and Hawkeye, the last which stayed on as a teacher seeing himself in the students. The student would eventually learned the truth of the Academy formation, that they weren’t training the next Avengers. They were preventing them from becoming the next Masters of Evil. However, the teachers saw the good in the students and continued training them.

After Fear Itself, Speedball and Justice resigned and Veil left as she believed they couldn’t cure her. They began opening up the Academy to more students with Lightspeed and White Tiger (Ava) joining the main class with Batwing, Butterball, Hollow, Juston Seyfert, Machine Teen, Power man, Ricochet, Rocket Racer, Lyra’s She-Hulk, Spider-Girl (Corazon), Thunderstrike (Kevin), Turbo and Wiz Kid joining the in-training class. Hybrid (Marks) eventually infiltrated the Academy pretending to be a mutant but was banished when it was discovered who he was. X-23 would join the main class. During AVX, the Academy hosted the X-men students but feeling they were being kept like prisoners, they eventually escaped with the help of the AA students. However, Loa decided to remain at the Academy.

The main class would graduated, with White Tiger and Power man joining Heroes for Hire and later the Avengers. X-23, Hazmat, Mettle, Reptil and Juston (and his Sentinel) were kidnapped by Arcade and force to fight each other to survive in Avengers Arena. Mettle, Reptil and Juston were killed but all three would eventually return. X-23 would leave and join the All-New X-men while Hazmat would join the rest of the survivors to hunt down Arcade. The Academy would remain open for a while but was confirmed to have closed as confirmed by Reptil during King In Black with Hazmat joining the Avengers.

With many new young heroes popping up, Captain Marvel (Danvers) reopened the school recruiting Captain America of the Railways (Aaron Fischer), Bloodline, Escapade, Kid Juggernaut, Moon Girl, Devil Dinosaur, Red Goblin and his symbiote Rascal. Blackheart would be forced to join the class when he was sent to Earth by his father to learn from them. Hazmat and Mettle would become teaching staff and like the first academy they had guest speakers. These included Mr. Fantastic, Jeff the Land Shark, Black Panther, She-Hulk (Walters), Wiccan, Shuri, Manifold, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Wolverine, Wasp (Janet), Valkyrie (Runa), Jean Grey and Iceman.
