They are the X-men of the UK….. or the Avengers….. Depends on who is writing. Introduced in Excalibur Special Edition #1 (1987) by Chris Claremont and Alan Davis, the X-men were believed to have been killed in their fight against the Adversary. Former members, Nightcrawler, Shadowcat and her pet, Lockheed, where recovering on Muir Island from their injuries from the Mutant Massacre, with Captain Britain and Meggan grieving for the lost of his sister. When Phoenix, Rachel Summers, was being chased by Technet, sent by Saturnyne, the four of them went to her rescue. After defeating the Technet, they decided to carry on Xavier’s dream as the British based team, Excalibur.

While fighting a Nazi version of Moira Mactaggart, Shadowcat found a spherical object and brought it back to their base to work on it. She activated it, dubbing it Widget. (This later turned out to be the Days of Future Past’s version of Kitty, whose mind found itself into this body.) During a dimension hoping adventure, they met Kylun, who would join their team, with Cerise being sent by Lilandra to be the Shi’Ar reputation on Earth. After the defeat of Necrom, the sorcerer Feron joined the team. British Superhero Micromax would be warmly welcomed into their ranks following his aid with Cloud Nine. Moira Mactaggart was given official membership despite being with the team nearly from the start, with Nightcrawler’s lover/ adopted sister, Dayspring, joining the team as a magic user. The team eventually found what appeared be a mered form of Cypher and Warlock, dubbed Douglock, but it was later discovered to be Warlock taking on his friend’s form. His old teammate Wolfsbane would join so after, being recruited by Douglock. The British government forced the team to fall under the command of Pete Wisdom, much to the team dismay. The final recruit of the original team was Colossus, who had recently been a member of the Acolytes before Magneto’s defeat. This team would eventually break up, with the mutants rejoining the X-men.

Another version of the team formed when Brain began receiving visions of an attack from Otherworld. Along with his wife, Meggan, and sister, Psylocke, plus friends Black Knight and Captain UK, they went find out what was happen. They were joined by other Captain Britain Corps member, Crusader X and Sir Benedict. This team didn’t last very long, ending when Brian was made king of the Otherworld.

Following M-day and the disappearance of Meggan, Brian found himself back near the Braddock Lighthouse wondering how he had ended up there. He was reunited with the founding members of the team when Pete Wisdom approached them to tell them that Dazzler had been attacked by Iceman (who had at the time been believed depowered). Together they discovered an evil version of the original X-men had attacked her. After they defeated them, they formed a new team with Pete Wisdom and Captain Britain returning and with Sage, Dazzler, Juggernaut and Nightcrawler’s alternate universe daughter and former Exile, Nocturne forming the New Excalibur. One day, Brain was attacked by Kesley Leigh, former Captain Britain and now Lionheart. He would later learn that there was a second group of Captain Britian Corps, which instead of choosing the Amulet of Right, had choosen the more violent Sword of Might. Lionheart would join with the team to help defeat this corp. A team-up with the Exiles, saw not only Brian being reunited with his thought deceased sister, but also Dazzler being reunited with her husband, Longshot, who joined the team shortly before it’s breakup.

Another team was formed during the Krakoa era when Apocalypse tried to get to Arrako through Otherworld, which enraged Roma. He contact Betsy, who had given up the mantle of Psylocke to Kwannon, to aid him in his quest. She refused and went to Avalon to assess the situation but when it was discovered that Brian had been corrupted by Morgan, Betsy took the Amulet of Right to become Captain Britain again. Together with Apocalypse, Rogue, Gambit, Jubilee and Rictor they formed a new Excalibur team. They were later joined by Betsy’s and Brian’s older brother, Jamie, who went by Monarch. Brian was eventually free from Morgan’s control and reunited with Meggan and his daughter. He took the name Captain Avalon with Meggan becoming Glorianna. They joined the team with Shatterstar and Bei the Blood Moon. The team broke up soon after with the fall of Krakoa.
