After a war that saw the two major Marvel teams battle, the X-men and Avengers come together to build bridges against Mutant discrimination. Introduced in Uncanny Avengers #1 (2012) by Rick Remender and John Cassaday, following AVX, which saw the X-men battle the Avengers over Hope Summers and the Phoenix, Captain America admitted that they don’t do enough for the mutant community. Along with Thor, they approached Havok to lead the team. They first went into action when a brainwashed Avalanche was attacking citizen and eventually killed himself. Wolverine arrived at the scene and explained that Avalanche had turned his life around and wouldn’t have done this. It was revealed that Red Skull had stolen the recently diseased Xavier’s brain and was using his power to turn the people against the team. He kidnapped Scarlet Witch and forced her to attack the mutants. Meanwhile Rogue, who was captured by Red Skull and S-men, escaped and together with Wanda, joined the new team defeat the Skull and his S-Men, but not before they escaped.

They moved into the Avengers Mansion, where Wasp joined to bankrolled the team while Wonder Man joined as a support member. Wolverine would travel to Japan and recruited Sunfire, who had recently been a member of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse and wanted redemption. They then held a press conference and introduced themselves and the Avengers Unity Squad. Their primary mission was to capture Red Skull and get back Xavier’s brain but they battled the likes of the Apocalypses Twins and changed history.

During Axis, Steve had given up his role as Captain America to Sam Wilson, who took his place on the team. Shortly after this, Red Skull used the Red Onslaught powers to turn the heroes into villains and villains into heroes. During the event, Scarlet Witch attack Dr. Doom and Latvaria for his role with M-Day. Doom, fearing for his citizen, used his powers to resurrect Dr. Voodoo to help him as well as Magneto and Quicksilver to stop her. Scarlet Witch used her magic to hurt anyone that had the blood of Magneto, revealing that she and Quicksilver weren’t Magneto’s children. After everything was restored, the team was joined by Vision and a still changed Sabretooth when they went to Counter-Earth to try and discovered the truth about the twin’s origins.

Following the destruction and restoration of the universe during Secret Wars, the team was reformed under Rogue’s leadership. Human Torch, Synapse, Spider-man and Deadpool joined the team with Deadpool financing the team and giving them his base of Schaefer Theater. However, Deadpool’s antic caused Spider-man to leave the team immediately. Stingray was also working as a spy on Deadpool’s Merc for Money, for Steve Rogers. During a battle with the Shredded Man, Cable joined the team, helping them fight the likes of Ultron and the Red Skull, who they capture and had Beast, remove the brain from his body. The Hydra Version of Captain America had also taken the place of the real Cap. With their mission complete and following No Surrender, the team disbanded.

It was reformed later following Orchis’ attack on Krakoa, which saw the group begin a major smear compaign against mutants as well as slaughtering many mutants. Captain America, along with Deadpool, Rogue and Quicksilver, decided to reform the team with Psylocke and Penance joining the team. Black Widow would work with them as an intelligence officer. They would later reveal that Captain Krakoa was not in fact Cyclops, but was being used by Supreme Hydra Captain America. When this was discovered, Blob defected from the MLF to the Uncanny team. While it was not confirmed, it was believed this team was disbanded before Blood Hunt and Cap moving to form the Avengers Emergency Response Squad as well as Rogue and Psylocke returning to the X-men.
