Fun fact. The Foot Clan of TMNT are based off of this group. Introduced in Daredevil #174 (1981) by Frank Miller, the Hand Clan is Marvel’s premier ninja clan. Billions of years ago, a group known as the Sickly Ones began worshipping a being known as the Beast and began killing anyone they see. They would later form the Nail, an elite group, and eventually turned into the Hand. Their rivals were originally the Fist but they believed to have falling until they were revive by DD. There was also the Chaste, who would be lead about Stick, who would also work to bring down the Hand.

There have be many leaders of the Hand, mainly the Beast, either himself or processing a host. The most famous leader of the Hand was Elektra, but there was also Mandarin, who was working with Matsu’o Tsurayaba. Gorgon would take over the Hand at one point and killed Wolverine (more on that later). During one of his breakdown, Daredevil took over the clan and form Shadowland in New York. He was later revealed to be controlled by the Beast. After he was defeated Kingpin took over the New York Branch. Sabretooth was the leader of the Japanese branch for a time with the Punisher eventually becoming the leader in an effort to use the clan on his war on crime but was defeated by Daredevil. There was also a time when Elektra was revealed to have been a Skrull named Pagon.

While many member/grunts of the clan are just brainwashed cultist, Hand has a method to gather member, willingly or not. They do this by resurrecting a dead person, either having being killed by themselves or a previous encounter. This causes the person to become corrupted and a loyal servant of the Beast. Such was the case for Elektra who was previous killed by Bullseye before being resurrected by the Hand. (However, DD interrupted this and use the ritual to revive her himself, purging her of her sins.) Another version of this was when Matsu’o Tsurayaba used the ritual to revive his dead lover Revanche and having Spiral swap her mind with Psylocke.

Going back to when I talked about Gorgon killing Wolverine, he was revived by the Hand when they were working with Hydra. They then revived Wolverine and sent him to began killing other heroes. This storyline, known as Wolverine: Enemy of the State, saw Wolverine killing many lesser known heroes, like Hornet, and the Hand reviving them into their Elite super-powered units. Wolverine would eventually snap out of it thanks for Elektra. However, it saw Northstar, Spot, Slyde (Beacher), Leap-Frog (Lang), Poison (Cardinale), SHOC, Vibro, Knicknack and a few unnamed heroes and villains joining the Hand. Many of them either were saved, killed or remained with the Hand.

Other NOTABLE members who joined, voluntarily or not, includes (in no particular order): Foggy Nelson, Colleen Wing, Echo, Omega Red, Hobgoblin (Urich), Hulk, Mystique, Lady Bullseye, Typhoid Mary, Tombstone, Bullseye, Viper, Black Tarantula, White Tiger (Del Toro), Blindspot, Lord Deathstrike, Silver Samurai (Shingen), Vibro, Deathwatch, Montana and Scarlet Samurai (Yashida).
