• Origins: When the Sandman and Trapster escaped prison together they rescued a helpless Wizard, adrift due to his malfunctioning anti-gravity discs, along the way. Together they formed an alliance dedicated to humiliating their mutual enemies, the Fantastic Four, by becoming an evil, mirror counterpart. Determined to form their own quartet, the criminal trio went through a series of brief recruits, none of whom proved satisfactory as a fourth member.

They are the evil Fantastic four. Introduced in Fantastic Four #36 (1964) by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, after each of them were defeated by the Human Torch, Wizard, Sandman and Paste Pot Pete (later Trapster) came together with their hatred of Human Torch and decided to team up and take down their common enemy and his rest of the Fantastic Four. Thinking they needed a fourth member to match the Fantastic Four, Wizard went searching for a woman he heard about and found Madame Medusa, who at the time had amnesia. Together they became the Frightful Four and nearly managed to defeat the F4 until Alicia Master summoned the human torch to help them. After a few more fights against the F4 and other heroes, Medusa left the team after the Wizard attacked the X-men who were protecting her.

This would begin the constant rotating roster of the Frightful Four, with the Wizard being the only member to be in every incarnation. This started with the Beetle (Jenkins) replacing Medusa but this was short-lived when the group was defeated by the F4 and Spider-man. Medusa would rejoin the team but she had regained her memories and was working with the F4. The team would attack the Baxter Building later and used their Negative Zone portal to free Sandman’s one time ally, Blastaar, who joined the team. They would later hypnotize Spider-man into joining them. They recruited Thundra, who joined in an effort to battle the Thing because she believed he was the strongest man at the time. She would eventually betray the team. The team would later attack and captured the Baxter Building. They held a recruitment drive in the building for their new fourth member. The F4 would eventually escape but not before the team freed the Brute, Reed Richard’s Counter-Earth counterpart.

There next recruit was Electro, who also wanted revenge against Spider-man and the F4. Sub-mariner villain Llyra would become the last member to join when Wizard decided enough was enough and removed Trapster and Sandman from the team. He wanted to revamp the team completely. He hired Taskmaster, Constrictor and Deadpool as the newest team but this team failed because…. well, Deadpool. Seeing this team as a failure, he recruited Hydro Man, Titania and Klaw into the team. they became involved in the battle a rogue Watcher which saw them eventually being teleported to prison. Wizard would later try and re-recruit Sandman but Sandman was trying to go straight and threatened Wizard to stay away from him. Instead he brought back the Trapster and recruit Dreadknight and Man-Bull to help in a kidnapping but this failed when Spider-man defeated them.

The next incarnation saw Wizard furious when the Fearsome Foursome appeared and believed they were stealing his name. So he brought back Klaw and recruited Red Ghost and his Super-apes as well as She-thing, who was still going through her mutation. Wizard would later recruit Absorbing man, Living Laser and Mr. Hyde for a quick job before he used on of Galactus’ Punisher Robots. With the aid of Hydro man and Trapster, Wizard brought in his half-wife, Salamander as well as his daughter, Cole, who infiltrated the Baxter Building as Johnny’s new girlfriend. She shut down the security of the building to allow the villains to enter but felt guilty about it and turned against her parents. Liking having five members, he later brought back Titania, Trapster, Hydro man and Klaw and attacked the new version of the F4 that included Black Panther and his new wife Storm.

When he was a member of the Intelligencia, he brought Hydro Man, Trapster and Klaw back and replaced Titania with She-Hulk (Lyra) but she later turned out to be a double agent for her father, the Hulk. She left and Trapster was replace with a female Trapster. Suffering from a brain-tumor and wanting to prove himself to his clone Bentley-23, he brought back Blastaar and forced Medusa to join him. They kidnapped his clone and brought them into the Negative Zone but they were rescued by the current F4. He would later brought back Klaw and began working with Karl Malus. Together they took the Carnage symbiote who bonded with Malus to become the Superior Carnage. They attacked City Hall and were defeated by Superior Spider-man. Wizard was later hired by the Quiet man to discredit the F4 because of his false sense of revenge against Reed for stealing Sue from him. Wizard recruited Wrecker, Thunderball and Bulldozer (Marci Camp). However, this wasn’t the only team Quiet man had Wizard form as he later brought  Reptilla, Gazelle, and Vertigo. When Bentley-23 turned against his creator, it impressed Wizard who brought She-Thing, Sandman and Thundra to help battle the Quiet Man.
