New York isn’t the only place that needed the Avengers. Introduced in West Coast Avengers #1 (1984) by Roger Stern and Bob Hall, when Vision made himself chairman following many of the Avengers disappearance with Secret Wars, he realized that the Avengers needed to expand and tasked Hawkeye to create a new team based out of California. Along with his then wife, Mockingbird, the pair recruited Tigra, Wonder man and Iron Man, who at the time was Rhodey. They formed the West Coast Avengers, later Avengers West Coast.

After completing their first mission, Tony Stark took the place of Rhodey, who had given up the mantle of Iron Man when the suit was harming his psych. While he was part of the Unlimited Class Wrestling Federation, the Thing encountered the team a number of time before he was given membership by the team but left before they could finalized it. After he was released from prison following his court marshaling when he attacked the Avengers and hurt his then wife Janet, Hank Pym joined the team as their science officer in an effort to prove he had changed. On a mission from Khonshu, Moon Knight went to the team and would later join the team, beginning a relationship with Tigra. Firebird would go to the team for help with her new powers and was given reserve status after helping the team and being a source of support for Pym. When Iron Man was kicked off the team due to his Armor War, Wasp joined the team to aid them. Wanting to build a life for themselves, Vision and Scarlet Witch moved to the West Coast and joined up with the West Coast team.

After Vision was dismantled, the Nation Security Council liason force U.S. Agent onto the team, causing Hawkeye to leave in protest. In an effort to repair the Vision and believing that the Vision’s body was the same body of the original Human Torch, they went in search of Dr. Horton and encounter a resurrected Human Torch (Hammond). (It was later revealed that Immortus had created a temporal copy of the Human Torch that Ultron used to create Vision.) He joined the team later the team. When Wanda had a mental breakdown following the lost of her children and joined Magneto, Quicksilver joined them before revealing he was actually aiding the Avengers behind the scene. Following the Shi’Ar/Kree War, Machine Man joined the team with Living Lightning and Spider-woman (Carpenter) joining after the team dealt with the Society of the Living Lightning. Darkhawk would gain honorary membership after helping the team with Moira Brandon getting honorary membership later on. Later the team was broken up by the Vision, which cause several members to quit the Avengers in protest and form Force Works.

Much later a new team of WCA was formed by Hawkeye along with his protegee, Kate Bishop. They recruited Kate’s boyfriend, Fuse, Miss America (Chavez), Gwenpool and Kid Omega. After an encounter with MODOK, Gwenpool adopted Jeff the Land-Shark. Alloy would be the last recruit before the team would disband.

Iron Man and War Machine would reform the team as a sort of villains reformation team. They brought Spider-woman (Drew) and Firestar with them and had a reformed Ultron and Blue Bolt placed on the team.
