They are the premier team to defend the world from the Supernatural. Introduced in Ghost Rider (Vol. 3) #31 (1992) by Howard Mackie and Andy Kubert, when the mother of all demons, Lilith, was on the verge of being resurrected, Dr. Strange began working behind the scenes to gather a force to battle her and her Lilin. He used his magic to reveal that nine heroes would come together and began influencing stuff behind the scene so that three separate teams would form. The Nightstalker formed with Blade, Hannibal King and Frake Drake, the Darkhold Redeemers formed with Sam Buchanan, Victoria Montesi and Louise Hastings and The Spirits of Vengeance formed with Johnny Blaze (who was separated from Zarathos at the time) and his brother, Ghost Rider (Dan Ketch). Along with Morbius the Living Vampire, these heroes formed the Nine, destined heroes to fight Lilith and her Lilin. Though not part of the Nine, Vengeance (Badilino) was also part of the Spirits of Vengeance and later Redeemers members, Mordred the Mystic and Louise Hastings’ grandson, Jinx. All three would just the Nine and officially they were called the Order of the Midnight Sons. After the battle with Litith and Zarathos, the Midnight Sons would eventually disband.

A second team of Midnight Sons was formed with ARMOR, a sub-division of SHIELD that specializes in monitoring alternate universes that may be a threat to the Prime universe. When some of the zombie from Marvel Zombies universe began infiltrating the Prime universe, Morbius was tasked with forming a team to hunt down and stop the Hunger virus from spreading. He asked his friend Werewolf by Night (who also aided the original team but didn’t join), Johnny and Danny’s cousin Jennifer Kale and Daimon Hellstrom. Man-Thing and Hood would later join this team.

A third version of the team were formed when Dr. Strange used his magic to rebuild and resurrect the city of Los Vegas after it was destroyed by Hydra during the Secret Empire. However this cause Mephisto to create Hotel Inferno, which began influencing the people and heroes around them. Bats, Dr. Strange’s talking ghost dog, went to Wong to form another team to save Strange. Wong contacted Blade, Mr. Knight (Moon Knight), Elsa Bloodstone, Doctor Voodoo, Man-Thing, Iron Fist, and Ghost Rider (Blaze). Scarlet Spider (Ben Reilly) would join the team later on.

Another team would form, under the new branding Midnight Suns (due to the game of the same name), when Strange Academy student Zoe Laveau accidentally projected a vision to supernatural characters across the world. Blade would form a new team with former Sorcerer Supreme and Ghost Rider, Kushala, Strange Academy teachers, Magik and Nico Minoru, and Wolverine.

During the Blood Hunt arc, the MS would form under Blade with Ghost Rider (Ketch) and Victoria Montesi joining him, until it was revealed that Blade had been possessed Varnae and was behind everything. It was revealed during this story arc that the Midnight Sons was actually an ancient organization that would be magically be formed to help battle threats from the supernatural side of Marvel. It’s unknown when they were members but past members included two Former Ghost Riders. Baron Skullfire and Molek.
