Whether you love or hate the Clone Saga, you have to admit it gave us one of 2 of the most important characters for Spider-man. Introduced in Amazing Spider-Man #149 by Gerry Conway and Ross Andru, known only as Spider-clone, he was created by the Jackal in order to get revenge on Spider-man for the death of Gwen Stacy. Peter defeated the clone but Jackal blow up the place they were fighting and made Peter believe the clone was dead. Fearing people would find out his identity, Peter threw the body down a factory smoke stack. Jackal recovered the body and replaced it with another dead clone. He then revived the clone who later escaped and started to live his own life. He took on the name Ben Reilly, after Peter’s uncle and his Aunt May’s maiden name.

He left New York and began travelling the states, using his powers to save people where he could. When he learnt that Aunt May was dying, he returned to New York to pay his respect and encountered Peter as Spider-man again. Even though they started out fighting each other, the two soon became as close as brother. Ben eventually wore a quick-made costume and used his powers to help people, which the media dubbed him as Scarlet Spider. When Jackal (and Osborn) tricked them into believing that Ben was the real Peter Parker and Peter found out that MJ was pregnant, Peter gave up the Spider-man identity to Ben. Ben remain Spider-man until the Green Goblin returned and enacted his revenge, which lead to Ben sacrificing his life to save a Peter. He turned into dust after confirming he was the clone. However, he was later revived by the Jackal, with all his memories, only to be killed over and over again, each time remembering everything up to his death. This eventually drove him mad and he escaped and replaced Jackal. He created a new company, which began revive dead people, only for Spider-man and his allies to stop him when they learnt that the clones were diseased with a zombie like virus. He was believed dead but survived and left to travel to Las Vegas where he returned to being Scarlet Spider.

Being the most famous Spider-man clone, you better believe that he has had tons of figures over the years. In the original Toybiz Spider-man Classic line (the one that would eventually become Marvel Legends), he was release in his Scarlet costume as a KB Toys exclusive. He was later release (Twice!) in his Spider Man costume as part of the Spider-man classic line with kid friendly action feature. Hasbro release one as part of the first Walmart Exclusive Ares wave as well as their own Spider-man Classic line (a re-release of one of TB figures). None of these were any good. In the Infinity line of Marvel Legends, one of the first waves of the Spider-man sub-line had the first proper Scarlet Spider for Legends in the Rhino Wave. The very next wave, the Absorbing Man wave, they release not only the Spider-man version, but swappable parts that would allow you to change the figure into a Spider-Carnage figure (which was great since the figure was 2 per case). They then re-released the Rhino wave version in the second Vintage wave.

Have

Spider-Clone

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends Hobgoblin wave – Classic Spider-man (AKA the pizza eating Spidey) OR Marvel Legends Vintage wave 1 Spider-man

  • Background:
    • Peter Parker awoke one day to be in his Spider-man costume, in a stadium, looking at another him. This turned out to be a revenge scheme by Jackal, who had cloned Peter in revenge for Gwen Stacy’s death. He made the 2 fight but had rigged the stadium to explode, trying to kill both of them. Peter believed the clone was dead and throw him down a factory smoke stack but Jackal revived him, who escaped.
  • Why you need it for your collection?:
    • If you are any sort of Scarlet Spider fan then you will need this version. While most will use him for Peter, which they really should, it can be used for Ben if you only collect Scarlet Spider.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • Like I said with Spider-man (Peter Parker) – No. No. A thousand times no. Spider-man has had this costume done so many times it’s ridiculous.

Scarlet Spider

Recommend Figure:Hasbro Marvel Legends Rhino Wave Scarlet Spider or Vinatge wave 2 Scarlet Spider

  • Background:
    • When Ben returned to New York, he tried to keep hidden. However, in order save some people, he throw on a make shift costume. The media dubbed him Scarlet Spider and this name and costume stuck. He later added web shooters and other items to the suit. He gave up the identity after he became Spider-man but has recently returned to it and his costume after he was revived and defeated by Peter.
  • Why you need it for your collection?:
    • This is figure that many Spidey fans have been asking for a long time. It is absolutely needed for any Spider collection as well as for a Spider-verse display. If you have gotten the Rhino wave one, the the Vintage wave can be skipped. However,if you missed it, then I recommend getting the Vintage one as it comes with a Ben Reilly head. The Rhino wave one has gotten very expensive at the moment so only get it if you want to build the Rhino.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No. It is just got an updated figure in the Rhino wave.

Spider-man

Recommend Figure:Hasbro Marvel Legends Absorbing Man Wave Ben Reilly Spider-man OR Spider-man Vintage Wave 2 – Ben Reilly’s Spider-man

  • Background:
    • When they were tricked into believing that Peter was the clone as well as MJ being pregnant with Peter’s child, Peter asked Ben to take the mantle of Spider-man, believing that he had the right to it because he was the “original” and so that he and MJ could start a new family somewhere else. Ben, not wanting to use Peter’s costume out of respect, redesign the classic costume into this new suit. It should also be noted that this was the costume that an Alternate Universe Ben wore during the Spider-verse as well as the suit that Mayday Parker wore in the M2C universe.
  • Why you need it for your collection?:
    • While many people who only collect one version of a character, I recommend getting this for not only your Spidey display but also for your Spider-verse display. I recommend getting 2 for the version below. If you missed the Absorbing Man wave, get the Vintage version.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No.

Spider-Carnage

Recommend Figure:Hasbro Marvel Legends Absorbing Man Wave Ben Reilly Spider-man (Swappable parts)

  • Background:
    • Introduced in the 90’s Cartoon (where he was Peter) and later in the comics, when Ben was Spider-man, the Carnage Symbiote separated from Kassidy, escaped from Ravencroft Institute and began attacking people. Ben bonded with it to stop it and became Spider-Carnage.
  • Why you need it for your collection?:
    • While the toy is not 100% accurate (needs the veins on the arms and legs), it is a nice fun addition to the figure, that truly made it a figure worth getting. Like I said I recommend getting 2 just to have the 2 versions. Needed for you Spidey, Spider-verse and Scarlet Spider collection.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No. it is just got an updated figure in the Absorbing man wave.

Beyond Spider-man

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends Spider-man Retro Wave 3 – Ben Reilly’s Spider-man

  • Background:
    • The Beyond approached Ben to take on the mantle of Spider-man and arranged a fight between Peter and Ben as well as the U-Foes. Peter was left in a coma, while Ben took up the mantle and was given a new costume.
  • Why do you need it for your collection?
    • If you want to build up your Spider-man or Scarlet Spider collection as well as Spider-verse, you may want to get this for those. He was also involved in the Devil’s Reign storyline.
  • Does it need a remake?
    • No.

Chasm

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends Spider-man Retro Wave 3 – Chasm
