• Unusual Feature: As a werewolf, Jack Russell possesses physical characteristics similar to that of a fully grown wolf, including brown fur, pointed ears, fangs, and clawed hands and feet. When in a feral state, his eyes are colored red. As a human Jack was involved in a demonic ritual which left him with a tattoo of a howling wolf head and a full moon across his chest.

Yes, his real name is a pun on purpose. Introduced in Marvel Spotlight #2 (1972) by Gerry Conway, Roy Thomas and Mike Ploog, Jack Russel’s family had been cursed with lycanthropy ever since his ancestor tried to kill Dracula. He would turn into a werewolf when he turned 18. For a number of years, he was more beast minded but an encounter with “The Three Who Are All” enabled him to retain his own mind in Werewolf form as well as allowing him to transform voluntarily. He began using this form to fight crimes and would encounter other heroes like Iron Man and Spider-woman. His comic was also the first time that Moon Knight appeared, after the hero was hired to hunt the Werewolf. 

He also gained a lifelong friendship with Morbius, a similar person who was suffering from a monster disease. He would later aid the Midnight Sons and would join a later version of the team. He also adopted Wolfsbane’s baby in order to protect her from those that wanted to be used or kill it. He would eventually end up in the Monster Metropolis, becoming one of its protectors, joining and leading some versions of the Legions of Monsters. He also had a brief relationship with Elsa Bloodstone as well as Shiklah, who was married to Deadpool at the time. 

Werewolf by Night has recently seen a boast in popularity due to someone else taking the mantle, but Russel was a popular character before. But it was still surprising when he received a figure as part of Toybiz’s Monster box set.

• Background:
  • Like many of Marvel’s Monsters, Werewolf by Night’s design borrows heavily on the Universal Studio version. However, because it is now a more generic design, Marvel can use it all they like.
• Why you need it for your collection?:
  • This is a figure you may need for your Horror collection as well as complete a number of teams including Legion of Monsters and Midnights Son. However, it was hard to find. It surprising that this guy hasn’t gotten a remake so I would just wait for it.
• Does it need a remake?:
  • Yes.
