They were solving the problems with the Multiverse before the MCU was a thing. Introduced in Exiles #1 (2001) by Judd Winick and Mike McKone, the insect-like creatures later known as the Time-Breakers discovered the tech that could travel through time and universes. However, their travels began to damage the multiverse so they needed to repair it. Since they were pacifists by nature, they decided to bring heroes from various universes to help repair the damages. Plucking them out of their universe, they brought Blink (Earth-295), Nocturne (Earth-2182), Morph (Earth-1081), Thunderbird (Earth-1100), Mimic (Earth-12), and Magnus (Earth-27). Under the orders of Timebroker, they were sent out to repair what was broken.

While the Exiles had a somewhat high success rate, they also had a death rate. There was always six members so when a member died, became incapacitated or was sent home, someone else took their place. The first to died was Magus who was replaced with Sunfire (Earth-2109). When T-Bird became braindead, Sasquatch / Heather Hudson (Earth-3470) replaced him. When Blink was sent home to help her adopted father Sabretooth, Magik (Earth-4210) replaced her, but Sunfire was killed by a brood infested Mimic, so Blink was brought back to replace her. Magik was eventually killed by King Hyperion with Namora (Earth-2189) replacing her. On a trip to the Prime Universe, Nocturne choose to stay and Beak (Earth-616) volunteered to replace her. Tanaraq took control of Sasquatch and was eventually lost in time with Sabretooth (Earth-295) taking her place. Beak is eventually lost in time and Holocaust (Earth-295) was chosen to take his place and be a distraction for King Hyperion. Both Holocaust and Namora were killed by King Hyperion with Beak and Heather returning. Mimic was eventually put into status and Heather decided to stay at the home base, leaving Morph, Blink, Sabretooth and Beak for missions. Mimic would eventually return but was taken over by Proteus with Beak going to his home dimension. Heather would recruited Longshot (Mojoverse) after making a deal with Mojo to film their adventures. Spider-Man (Earth-6375) volunteered to help the team and Power Princess (Earth-712) would join when the team tried to recruit the Squadron Supreme’s Hyperion to fight King Hyperion. Morph was taken over by Proteus (Earth-58163) and took Morph’s place on the team. Power Princess returned home, and Heather would recruit Psylocke (Earth-616), who had recently been killed. Heather would leave the team and Psylocke took the role of leader. T-Bird would awaken from his coma with Cat (Earth-79596) as a sort of trainee for the group. Rogue (Earth-1009) and Mystiq (Earth-797) would volunteer to join the team after Spider-man left the team to be with his new love.

The team would eventually team up with Excalibur which eventually saw a exchange of members of sorts. Blink would leave with T-bird reunited with his liver Nocturne, with the couple leaving. Longshot would regain his memories and left to be with his wife Dazzler. Sage (Earth-616) would volunteer to join to help boost their members as well as help with her surging powers. Thus Sabrotooth, Proteus, Psylocke, Cat, Rogue, Mystiq and Sage became the New Exiles. Gambit (Earth-6706) would volunteer to join the team and Morph and Proteus would merge into one. Cat would eventually die fighting Hydra and Rogue would eventually leave when she found love, with Gambit leaving to take over his father’s kingdom, following Namor’s death. Valeria Richards (Earth-1720) arrived to join the team after before the book was eventually cancelled.

However, the adventures wasn’t done. Morph took over the role of Timebrokers, having been given immense powers thanks to merging with Proteus. Blink would remain in the team with Polaris (Earth-8149), Beast (Earth-763), Panther (Earth-1119), Forge (Earth-2814) and Witch (Earth-8823) were all recruited to replace the original member, who were believed killed. Witch would be secretly replaced by Scarlet Witch (Earth-90631) and Nocturne would return to replace Blink.

Many years later, after some of the members had returned, most of them disappeared. The Unseen (Nick Fury of the Prime Universe), noticed a being called the Time-Eater devouring universes and timelines. He recruited Blink to lead a team, Khan (Earth-81111) and Iron Lad (Earth-18651). Khan would later died trying to stop the Time-eater with Valkyrie (Earth-22681) and Wolvie II (Mojoverse) joining to help. They were later joined by Captain America (Earth-86315), Becky Barnes (Earth-86315) and King (Earth-18136)
