Grim Reaper need for revenge was so great he formed the first of many Lethal Legions. Introduced in Avengers #78 (1970) by Roy Thomas, John Buscema and Tom Palmer, wanting revenge for his brother’s, Wonder man, death, Grim Reaper gathered a number of villains who also wanted to destroy the Avengers. Living Laser, Man-Ape, Power man (Josten) and Swordsman (Duquense) helped formed this original version of this team. They kidnapped Black Panther’s then girlfriend, Monica Lynne, and capture Black Panther himself. They almost succeeded in defeating the team until Reaper freed Vision after learning he had his brother’s brain patterns.

The team would later reform with the aid of Ultron in order to attack the West Coast Avengers. Grim Reaper, Man-Ape and Goliath (formerly Power Man (Josten)) returned to the team with Nekra and Black Talon (Barone) joining.

During Dark Reign, after Norman Osborn became the head of Super-human activities, Grim Reaper reformed the team with villains that had a grudge against Osborn. Grim Reaper and Nekra were joined by Absorbing Man, Grey Gargoyle, Tiger Shark, Mister Hyde and Reaper’s brother, Wonder Man. However, it was later revealed that this was all planned by Reaper and Osborn to make this Avengers (the Dark Avengers) look better then the regular team.
