This foul mouth, vodka drinking bear definitely isn’t a big teddy bear. Introduced in Incredible Hulk #250 (1980) by Bill Mantlo and Sal Buscema, Ursa Major was forced to join the Soviet army at a young age and was made join the Soviet Super Soldiers. His first fight saw him fighting the Hulk but the Hulk convinced them to use their powers for the people and not the Soviet Government. He would remain with the SSS through out it’s run and would defect alongside the twins. After being captured and returned to the Soviet’s, he was rescued and joined the Siberforce.

After M-day, Ursa Major kept his powers and joined the Winter Guard. He would help with the investigation of the death of Abomination following his murder by Red Hulk. He was later imprisoned and forced to join the Red Room. He secretly bribed a scientist to give the clone of Black Widow all of her previous memories and worked with her to destroy the Red Room program. He was imprisoned but was later recruited into the latest Winter Guard. He was then sent to a meeting of various international teams set up by Black Panther to try an unite the world heroes. However, he tried to attack Black Panther who teleported him back to Siberia. It turned out however, that this was all an act as he was in fact a double agent to Black Panther, sent to spy on the questionable Russian team.

Ursa Major, while having a few people asking for him (myself including), was one of those characters that many felt wouldn’t be made. This is mostly because, well, he is a big bear. However, Hasbro decided to answer people request and made him the BAF of an Iron Man wave.

  • Background:
    • Since his powers is basically transforming into a bear, Ursa Major has been drawn differently by different artist, each given their own interpretation of what a bear should look like
  • Why you need it for your collection?:
    • If you are building the Winter Guard, which we have a good number of members of, you will need Ursa Major as he has been in many Russian teams. It is also needed for a Hulk collection as well as Black Widow and the Avengers.

    • No.
