Hey, my fellow Plastic Addicts. Today is special as today we look at our very first OFFICIAL Micronaut figure in Marvel Legends. (I say official because I did a NCS to Arcturus Rann, but that was only because he was Captain Universe and not himself.) Before we talk about the character, like I like to do with these toyline tie-in figures, a little background on the line itself. Originally created by Takara as Mircomen, Mego bought the licence and rebranded it was Micronaut. It was mostly just a repackaging of the Takara line but they did add other original characters to the line. After Mego’s closure, the licence would get bought by Palisades Toys, and then SOTA Toys (which never saw release) until the licence was eventually bought up by Hasbro in 2009, which they still own until this day. They have tried to relaunch the line a few times but most never go past the concept phase.
As for the comics, as was the standard practice at the time, Mego would licence of the line to Marvel. Because they didn’t have a story for the line, it was up to Marvel to create the story for the line. Thus they launched Mirconaut in 1978 by writer Bill Mantlo and artist Michael Golden. This series ran for 57 issues, making it one of the longest tie-in comic in Marvel’s history. They would return for another 20 issue run until Hasbro took the licence and handed it to Image. The Marvel versions would eventually get a omnibus remastered version. It should be noted that Marvel created many original characters for the comic, including Arcturus and Bug, that they own the full rights to but can’t use the Micronaut’s name when these character appear. None the less, it seems like the Omnibus version may have been the catalyse for Hasbro to allow the Marvel Legends team to start creating figure for the brand starting with Acroyear, who was considered the first figure in the original line. (Note: this is only the Marvel Version of the character).
