He can’t die. No. That is all to him. Introduced in West Coast Avengers (Vol. 2) #46 (1989) by John Byrne, Craig was born with the gift of immortality. Shortly after his birth, his mother died and made Deathurge to promise to watch over Craig. Craig grew up being visited by Deathurge but his father couldn’t see him and believed it to be Craig’s imaginary friends. However, Deathurge would put Craig into dangerous situations, which ended in his father dying in a fire. He was taken in by an abusive man, but fell in love with his daughter. They moved out together but she eventually committed suicide with Deathurge appearing before Craig. Craig begged him to take Craig as well but Deathurge refused. Craig tried to kill himself several times, each more gruesome then the last, but realised that he couldn’t die. Realising that he had super-powers, he decided to use them to become a hero, taking the name of Mr. Immortal.

After being shot and left for dead while trying to prevent a bank robbery, he realised he needed a team. So he did what any other person would do….. put an ad in the local newspaper. It was answered by Big Bertha, Doorman, Flatman, Dinah Soar and Leather Boy (who didn’t last long). He began a relationship with Dinah, whose language only he could understand. Together they formed the Great Lake Avengers. After a while, Hawkeye and Mockingbird came to find out why they were using the name Avengers, only to train the team. They did change the name to Lightning Rods to cash in on the Thunderbolts but quickly changed back after it was revealed that the T-Bolts were the Masters of Evil.

After the Avengers disassembled, Craig believed they were the only Avengers so they decided to take on Maelstrom but it resulted in the death of Dinah Soar. Craig would drown his sadness with alcohol and music. Deathurge would eventually visit him and they would fight, ending when Deathurge explained to Craig that he was a Homo Surprem and his role in the cosmic event was to witness the end of this universe. The team went after Maelstrom and Craig eventually convince Maelstrom to commit suicide but exploding. Having saved everyone, the team would regroup and believed they were all mutants, changing their names into the Great Lake X-men (which again didn’t last long.) They would sign the SRA as Wisconsin’s official team but Deadpool would force them to break apart. Craig and Big Bertha would become engaged but soon broke up. They would later reform but would lose their Avengers status. Craig would later be called on by Cap for the Avengers Emergency Response team.
