He would do anything to get ahead, even let a demon possess him. Introduced in Machine Man #19 (1981) by Tom DeFalco and Steve Ditko, the former Marines and CIA agent turned to mercenary as the first Jack O’Lantern. He would become rivals with Hobgoblin during a gang war and was the person behind the killing of Ned Leeds, believing him to be the true Hobgoblin. He would then take the identity of Hobgoblin, not knowing that he had killed a fake. During the Inferno event, he would make a deal with a demon, transforming him into a demonic version of the Hobgoblin.
After working with Carrion to defeat Spider-man, he would join with the Sinister Six. However, the demon in his body would later split from Macendale and became Demogoblin. He would regain his powers when Kraven’s son, the Grim Hunter, gave Macendale his father formula. He would rejoin the Sinister Six after Doc Ock’s death and would eventually lead the team when it became the Sinister Seven. He would later begin working for Gaunt who transformed his body into a cyborg. He would be defeat by Spider-man. Sent to prison, he was later killed by the original Hobgoblin (Kingsley). He was one of many villains resurrected by Ben Reilly’s Jackal.
Macendale is probably the second most famous version of the Hobgoblin, mostly due to his role in the 90’s Spider-man cartoon. He has receive a number of figure over the years, including the classic version of Kingsley costume. He receive a figure as part of the Toybiz Spider-man Classics line, which was re-released later in the line. While he would later receive an figure when his demonic head was included in the Space Venom’s Hobgoblin figure.
