Being a cosmic superhero is not all it’s cracked up to be. It could even cause you to create a new universe. Introduced in Silver Surfer Annual#6 by Ron Marz and Joe Phillips, Genis-Vell is the cloned son of the original Captain Marvel. He was created after his father died by cancer. Mar-Vell’s lover, the Titan Elysius, was heartbroken and took a part of Mar-Vell’s DNA to create a child that she gave birth to. To protect him from Mar-Vell’s enemies, he was rapidly aged and given false memories of a childhood. Originally believing he was the son of Starfox, he later discovered his legacy and took his father Nega-Bands and became Legacy. During the Destiny War, he was forced to bond with Rick Jones in order to save Jones’ life and became the latest Captain Marvel.
However this cause his Cosmic Awareness powers to trigger, making him a target for manipulation of Entropy and Epiphany which caused him to go insane and recreate the universe. This also cause the existence of his sister Phyla to become real as she never existed in main universe until then. She fought him and eventually help him return to normal. This cause Genis-Vell to travel the universe in penance. He eventually arrive on Earth where he joined the Thunderbolts as a way to right the wrongs he had commit and took the name of Photon, a name that Monica Rambeau was using, which cause them to have a fight but she eventually gave him the name and took up Pulsar. Genis-Vell eventually absorbed the Nega-Bands grew more powerful. He was eventually killed by Baron Zemo, when he learnt that Genis would become a treat to the universe. He has since not return (that I know of).
Despite been a shortlived character, Genis has proven to be quite a popular character. He has had a few toys over the years usually as part of some Captain Marvel thing. Toybiz made a figure of him, as Captain Marvel, as a variant of Mar-Vell as part of MODOK series. He wouldn’t see another Legends figure until Hasbro announced that he would be coming out as part of the Captain Marvel Kree Sentry wave.

Captain America

Recommend Figure: Toybiz Marvel Legends MODOK Series Captain Marvel (Variant)
- Background:
- During the storyline Destiny War, Rick Jones had regained his Destiny powers. While on the moon with the Supreme Intelligence, he was attacked and used this powers to summon a number of Avengers from various time periods, including future Avengers, Songbird and Genis-Vell. Genis was seen in this costume for the first time. It is similar to his father’s costume.
- Why you need it for your collection?:
- If you are a Captain Marvel fan (be it Danvers, Mar-Vell or even Rambeau) or are a Avengers or Thunderbolts collector, then you could get this figure. Thankfully they are going for relatively cheap on the market but trying to find a reliable seller might be tough.
- Does it need a remake?:
- Yes, but not his own figure. Maybe a swappable head for a redone Captain Mar-Vell.
Kree Navy

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends Captain Marvel Kree Sentry Wave Genis-Vell
- Background:
- As Genis had recreated the universe, he also gave himself a new costume. This one resembles a standard Kree Uniform but at the same time has some very big differences.
- Why you need it for your collection?:
- If you missed the Toybiz version, then I say it would be easier to get this. Not really needed for any team but would make it nice to stand out in a Captain Marvel display.
- Does it need a remake?:
- No.
