Hey, my fellow Plastic Addicts. Today we start our X-men ’97 Season 2 Month with an Ideal Wave. Before we get onto the Ideal wave, just to remind people, if you haven’t already asked for an X-men/mutant based Missing Legends please do so soon. (Where are my X-men collectors at? How did I get only 2 Mutants MLR so far when i got nearly ten for Punisher? LOL). You can enter it in the Missing Legends Request page.
Anyway, onto the Ideal wave. Since the announcement of the release of the series, I had a hard time trying to come up with a X-men wave for this. But then someone actually asked for a Missing Legends that instantly spark an inspiration in my mind. Hasbro has made 2 waves for the Age of Apocalypse and a full wave based on the Krakoa era, why not make another wave based on the Ultimate Universe X-men, particular the Earth-1610 version. You see Toybiz did a few figures in their X-men Classic line. Hasbro also had plans to release a pair of them in a now cancelled line. So I thought I would use some of those and add a few more characters to create this wave. Thus here is a Ultimate X-men wave.
Theme of the wave: Ultimate Universe X-men
As for why I picked each (As always remember if I don’t mention it, they will obviously get a new head):
- Cyclops: We start with one of two characters that Hasbro wanted to release way back at the start of them taking the licence using the extremely old Classic body mold was Ultimate Cyclops. You can’t have an X-men team in a new universe without Cyclops. Any other character but not Cyclops. This will is the Vulcan mold with some new overlays for his straps and pouches.
- Magneto: Now for the other one that was originally planned to be release but never made it out was Magneto, that used the original Magneto mold. Of course that won’t work at all today. This would need a proper mold for Magneto. There is a rumored Magneto coming so let’s wait and see if that is a new mold.
- Nightcrawler: Now we move onto one of two remake in this line, the first being Kurt. He was originally released in the X-men Classic Line and that was bogged down with toy gimmicks. He does need a new figure thus this one will be Kurt’s own mold that was used for the Wendigo wave, 97 wave and the X-force version. It will only need a new head and slight alterations like a new belt.
- Iceman: Next up for a remake we have Iceman who was also released in the X-men Classic line, as a one of two Variants for Classic Iceman. They all used the original Iceman mold but not only does it not look right compare to today’s molds, it was much too big for the much younger Ultimate Iceman. Thus this one would use the Amazing Fantasy mold, made with clear plastic.
- Jean Grey – Now with all those cancelled and remakes out of the way, we move onto the new characters for this wave and our two ladies, starting with Jean Grey. Like Cyclops, she was a central figure in this version of the X-men. Thus if they were to make this wave, she would HAVE to be included. This would use the new standard Female mold.
- Storm: Now for the second female of the wave we have the second main lady of the original line-up, Storm. HOWEVER, unlike the prime version, this one is a much younger version of the character. Thus, this version of the character would have to use the smaller teenage mold with some new parts.
- Jimmy Hudson: And for the last regular figure, we are moving to a character that was introduced much later in the universe, Jimmy Hudson, Logan’s son. I had to include a Wolverine in the wave. it didn’t have to be Logan, who has had a updated only recently. However, for people that want to build up their X-men membership, I decided to go with the costume he wore when he was flung into the Prime and joined the All-New X-men /X-men: Blue team. He would use the same mold as his “Brother” Daken.
- BAF: Colossus: Now for the BAF, I was going to make it Juggernaut but then I realise what month it was and their is a certain character that I had to include, Colossus. You see in the Ultimate universe, Colossus is gay. So in celebration of Pride Month, I decided to include him as the BAF in this wave. Because he doesn’t have the bands like his Prime universe, this would be new mold with smoother arms.
And that is what I think an Ultimate X-men wave would look like. Yes, I know some would say I should have included something from the NEW Ultimate Universe X-men by Peach Momoko but all of those character would be new characters for out collection that we would want a prime version of anyway and Peach Momoko’s art, while absolutely beautiful, does not make for great toys. That and I wanted to stick to this universe instead as we have gotten quite a few characters from universe, making it the second largest COMIC universe we have gotten in ML, just after the Prime Universe and just before the AOA universe. None the less, let me know what you think in the comments below or on any of the social media sites.
The next post will be on Saturday where we will look at a team that Wong has been part of, the magic side of SHIELD.
