What if Logan was the Winter Soldier? That was the question asked in Ultimate Universe: One Year In #1 (2024) by Chris Condon and Alessandro Cappuccio. In this universe, Logan was still a soldier but unlike in the Prime universe, he wasn’t a subject of the Weapon X program. This was because the Maker destroyed the facility before they even got the chance to approach him. He would still fight in in several wars and had a brief romance with Silver Fox. He would transfer to Eurasian Republic and join the Opposition, a group of rebels fighting against the tyrannical rule of Colossus, Magik and Omega Red. He became close with fellow resistance member Kurt Wagner, Kitty Pryde and Victor Creed, the last one in particular who he made promise that he would kill Logan if he fell into the enemy’s hands. However, he would eventually be capture after surviving an airstrike by the Republic on the Directorate X facility. Using Jean Grey, another subject, to keep him passive and under control, they bonded his bones with adamantium and transformed him into the Republic’s Winter Solder.

As Winter Soldier, he was sent to kill his former colleagues, like Kurt and Raven Darkholme. In a battle with Kitty, she used her powers to short-circuit the Republic control on him and he began to remember his past. Colossus used the Phoenix specimen to control him again and sent to kill Creed. However, with the aid of Natasha Romanov, they defeated Winter Soldier and brought him to there base, where David Haller used his powers to help Logan remember who he was. Now taking the name Wolverine, he began working with his friends once again to bring down the Republic. He joined Strike Team X to rescue a cyborg Angel, who killed Abigail Brand and Beast. Wolverine was opposed to letting him join but Kitty convinced him to allow it.

He would eventually led a strike against the facility that once held him. He rescued Jean and threatened the doctor that created him to help them until the Rasputin siblings arrive and killed the doctor. They would have capture Logan if Jean hadn’t used his powers to save them, melting Colossus’ head and causing Magik to flee. Once Jean recovered, Logan, alongside Jean and David Haller, began hunting down Magik, eventually finding her in a castle. Despite showing that her past, Logan killed her believing her tragic past isn’t an excuse to be a tyrant.
