He would be a loyal Soviet soldier until he learnt his origins. Introduced in Iron Man #109 (1978) by Bill Mantlo and Carmine Infantino, Vanguard was taken from his parents and separated from his twin sister (later Darkstar) in order for the Soviet to raise him as their soldier. He was sent with the Soviet Super Soldier to attack Iron man and hero US heroes. He was later sent to kill his father, the Presence, with his then unknown sister but learnt of his true origins. He would defect to the West only to be dragged back to Russian. He was rescued by the Siberforce and joined the team.

He was later killed when he helped Quasar to defeat the latest Star Brand. The Presence learnt of his death and used most of his powers to resurrect his son. After the fall of the Soviet Union, he would join the Winter Guard. After his sister death from Weapon XII, he spilt from the Guard and formed the Protectorate and tried to revive his sister. After the death of his teammates fighting the Dire Wraiths, he would take up the mantle of Red Guardian (the black and red version). After a few more adventures, he rejoined the Winter Guard and, while he wore the classic Red Guardian costume, returned to using the name Vanguard.

With the announcement of Darkstar and Ursa Major in the Iron Man Ursa Major wave, people have begun asking for a Vanguard figure. However, given the nature of his costume (the hammer and sickle emblem), we mightn’t get that version. However, given that he has been sporting the Red Guardian costume longer then his original design, we have actually gotten a version of him in the Civil War Giant Man wave.

Winter Guard Vanguard

Recommend Figure:  Hasbro Marvel Legends Captain America: Civil War Giant Man wave – Red Guardian

  • Background:
    • When he took up the mantle of Red Guardian, he would wear a more unique costume. However, following the formation of a new team of Avengers, Russia began re-forming the Winter Guard. He was recruited into the team and while he wore the classic Red Guardian costume, he would return to being all Vanguard.
  • Why you need it for your collection?:
    • If you are building the most modern version of the Winter Guard, you will need this version. It is also need to National Heroes (like Captain America), to which this is Russia’s version. It is need for Cap, Avengers and Black Widows collection.
