Introduced in Incredible Hulk #125 (1971) by Roy Thomas, Herb Trimpe and Steve Gerber, Barbara’s mother made a deal with the Undying Ones to restore her youth, offering her daughter as a sacrifice. However, she would die in an accident making the deal complicated. Barbara and her husband, Jack Norris, would join the cult that worshipped the Undying Ones, and they would capture the Hulk to battle the protector of the barrier between this and the Undying Ones world. Barbara had second thoughts about this, and the cultist threw her into the dimension with the Hulk. They were rescued by Dr. Strange but the death of the Guardian, Nightcrawler/Dark-crawler, cause Barbara to sacrifice her life to protect the barrier.
Strange and the Hulk would return to battle the Undying Ones as part of the Defenders and would eventually rescue Barbara, who was forced to merge with the Nameless One. They would then be moved into another world where they would become involved in a battle between Casiolena and Enchantress plus Black Knight. Enchantress used her powers to merge Barbara with Brunhilde to become the new Valkyrie. (Brunhilde’s origin was still unknown as the time, and it was believed to just be a form Enchantress took.) While as Valkyrie, Brunhilde would control Barbara while Barbara’s soul would sleep. Valkyrie would have many adventures in Barbara’s body until she learnt the truth of her origins.
Brunhilde eventually found her original body but instead of her soul transferring to it, Barbara’s soul did. Manipulated by Ollerus, Barbara, as Valkyrie, would be sent to Midgard to request the aid of the Defenders to join the villains’ army but his plans was foiled and Barbara was sent to Niffleheim as punishment. Brunhilde was eventually killed in Barbara’s body and her soul was transferred to Dragonfang. With the aid of the Defenders, Barbara’s soul was eventually put to rest.
Like the other people who had used the soul of Valkyrie, Barbara would wear Valkyrie’s classic form. As such the 2-pack Valkyrie with Hulk and be used as Barbara.
