Ever wondered why many villains seem to get a tech upgrade. He is the reason why. Introduced in Amazing Spider-Man #2 by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Phineas was a tech genius who owned a repair ship called Phineas’ Fix It. He would later find a fleeing Doom both and repaired it, grafting fake skin to it and giving it the name Vincent Doonan. However with the raise of superhuman and Phineas’ that they are using their powers foolishly, Vincent would leave him. Phineas would take on the name Tinkerer, selling his genius to villains, particularly those that target Spider-man. His first notable time working for a villain was when he aided Mysterio in tricking Spider-man into believing that alien’s were invading. He would escape before Spider-man even learnt who he was. He would later be hired by Kingpin to tinker with the Spider-mobile and sent it to attack Spider-man.

He would later be hired by Rocket Racer to upgrade his board but after Racer blackmailed Weele, Weele hired Tinkerer to help him construct the Big Wheel. After that he began working behind the scenes, upgrading Diamondback’s new throwing stars, repairing Goldbug’s ship and so much more. He was eventually sent to prison by the Judge but would escape when his son was killed by criminals that the Judge had released. He attack the Judge’s home but accidentally killed the Judge’s wife and gravely injured the Judge. Feeling guilty over the wife’s death, he revive the Judge, and somehow gave him powers. Judge wouldn’t remember any of this. Phineas and the Judge would begin working together hunting down criminals until a report reveal the truth to the Judge. Judge used his powers on Phineas but didn’t kill him as he believed the villain was repentive.

After escaping from a SHIELD raid, he escaped to Latvaria where he was treated as a guest of Lucia von Bardas. This would eventually be used as an excuse to convince Nick Fury that Bardas was a terrorist and launched the Secret War arc. During the Civil War, he was upgraded Stilt-man’s suit, hoping the lot would kill each other. He was later attacked by Punisher. He was later arrested when he was out for ice cream with his grandchildren, for not registering with the SRA, despite being retired and no longer active. He wasn’t given a proper trial and sent to the Negative Zone. When the Baxter Building was sent into the Negative Zone, Ben and Johnny went to he Tinkerer to help him rebuild one of Reed’s machine. Initially refused due to losing his family because of his arrest, he was convinced by Franklin pleading.

He was later approached by Hobgoblin (Urich) to help him hide from the Superior Spider-man’s surveillance but Phineas had taken Tiberius Stone, who wanted revenge of Urich, so he made the tech fail on Urich. Over a decade ago, he met the Vedomi, an AI based alien race, who wanted to see how humanity would treat AI. Seeing that they treated AI as servant, they left the planet promising to return eventually. Becoming disillusioned with humanity, Tinkerer gave criminal untraceable Stark Phones, fitted with a hidden AI system. Wanting to also gain the trust of the hero side, he created a robot suit that appeared as a fake-brother of Phineas, Hophni, selling his services to heroes. He would later began working with Grey Blade, who were building a database on taking down villains and heroes. After Teresa Durand stole the files, he hire Vulture to “attack” Hophni, Hophni was saved by Spider-man and Teresa. After a time travel adventure, Spider-man prevent the Vedomi’s invasion and defeated Tinkerer, with Phineas leaving with the Vedomi.
