If there was anyone in the Age of Apocalypse X-men that truly deserve to have revenge against Apocalypse then it was Sunfire. Introduced in Astonishing X-Men #1 (1995) by Scott Lobdell and Joe Madureira, Sunfire was still the premier superhero of Japan alongside his cousin Silver Samurai when he was invited by Magneto to join the X-men to stop Apocalypse’s rise to power. While he was away with the team, Apocalypse began is culling of Asia and Europe. Sunfire rushed back to Japan to find it in flames with Samurai trying to rescue survivor. While Samurai helped the evacuees, Sunfire went to attack Apocalypse’s troops and Nemesis. Unable to defeat Nemesis, Sunfire exploded release a nuclear blast that destroy Apocalypse’s troop and destroying most of Japan’s land. This caused him to burn off all of his skin. He was captured and given to Maximus, the Horseman of Death but was eventually rescued by the X-men and given a special suit to help him control his powers.
He would remain with the X-men as they tried to stop Apocalypse. He was sent with a team to stop the culling of humans in Chicago and stop an Infinite Processing Plant. When the team went to rescue Magneto and his son, he tried to redeem his failure from Japan by aiding people in evacuating. Years later, when the Prime universe’s Uncanny X-men came to his world, he battle and sacrificed himself to stop Genocide (The Prime version of Nemesis/Holocaust) from scorching the Earth.
This version of Sunfire is actually very popular, so much so that the design was later used in the main universe when Sunfire was made into a horseman of Apocalypse. It won the first ever Hasbro fan poll held by Toy Fare magazine. It was release via Hasbro toy shop but eventually found it’s way into some stores. It was then remade as a part of the Age Of Apocalypse wave.
