He has been known by many names….. mostly because of copyright problems. Introduced in Marvel Premiere #9 (1973) by Robert E. Howard, Roy Thomas, Gardner Fox, Steve Englehart and Frank Brunner, Shuma-Gorath is one of the Great Old Ones that once rules over the planet, whose rule came to an end whan a time traveling Dr. Strange banished him from the Earth-Realm. He would later return battle the BC Avengers. At some point he would return and became embroiled in the Hyborian Age (Conan) saga and in the 19th century, became a god to a Cult. He would later return when he took over the mind of the Ancient One and tried to return to the Earth realm. He would battle Dr. Strange again, where Strange had no choice but to kill his master to prevent Shuma from returning.
Over the years, he would battle Strange again as well as various other heroes, like the Fantastic Four, Invaders, Agatha Harkness and was one of the reason’s Luke Cage’s Mighty Avengers forms. He was also responsible to Empirikul rampage across the Multiverse, when it was revealed he was ruling over the Imperator’s planet, causing him to hate Magic and wanting to destroy it. He was last seeing battle the GOTG. But it’s not just the Prime universe he interfered with. As a multiversal being, he can exist being in any universe. His most famous journey was in the Marvel Vs. Capcom universe where he inadvertedly helped saved the universe.
As such, his first ever Marvel Legends figure was part of the Marvel Vs. Capcom Gamerverse anniversary line under the name Gargantos. This is due to the fact that the name Shuma-Gorath is copyrighted to the Conan franchise so Marvel can use the name in the comics but they can’t use it in movie, or toys, with the MVC being an exception.

- Why do you need it for your collection?
- You may want to get this for your Dr. Strange / Magical villains. Strange is considered his most frequent adversary. You can also get for a Cosmic shelf or an Avengers villains shelf. However, I’m sure many will be getting for a MVC collections.
