He went from another hired muscle to a big softy. Introduced in Amazing Spider-Man #41 (1966) by Stan Lee and John Romita Sr., Aleksei was a Russian mafia thug who was selected by the leaders to take part in an experiment because of his size and low intelligence. He was bonded with a suit patterned after a rhino, with a tick hide and horns. He was then sent to kidnap John Jameson, JJJ’s son and battled Spider-man. Thus began a long time rivalry between the two. He would also battle the Hulk, Avengers, Defenders and many other heroes and villains. He would also join many teams such as The Emmisary of Evil and the Sinister Six/Syndicate.

His biggest change in his life was after being attacked by Punisher during the Civil Wars. This scared Rhino immensely and after his latest stint in prison decided to turn his life around. He met, fell in love and married Oksana and took a job as a bouncer at a casino. He even earned the approval of Spider-man. However, he was soon attacked by a new Rhino which saw the death of his wife. Despite pleas from Spider-man, he donned the suit again and killed the new Rhino. His grief at the loss of his wife lead him to join Doc Ock plan in destroying the Earth. He was believed killed while Silver Sable held him off. He would return when he joined the Jackal as a henchman, when the Jackal made a clone of Rhino’s right. After all the clones were destroyed in the Clone Conspiracy, Rhino went berserk but Spider-man managed to convince him to stand down and let himself be taken in.

As one of Spider-man’s most beloved villains, Rhino as seen many figure releases over the years. He would receive a figure as part of the Toybiz’s Pre-ML Spider-man Classics line (which would see a few releases later). His first Marvel Legends came in a box set from Toybiz alongside Spider-man, Vulture, Carnage and Lizard. He wouldn’t receive another figure until much later when he was the BAF of a Spider-man wave from Hasbro. This BAF would later get a slight resculpt and released as a Deluxe Retro figure.

Classic

Recommend Figure:  Hasbro Fan Channel Exclusive Marvel Legends Spider-man Retro Deluxe – Rhino

  • Background:
    • This is the version that most people think of when they think of Rhino. Like many classic version this has been drawn differently by different artist.
  • Why you need it for your collection?:
    • As one of Spider-man’s most famous villains, you will need this version for your collections. If you have no interest in Spider-man, then he can be used for the Hulk, Avengers, Defenders, as well as many villainous teams.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No.

Justin Hammer Upgrade

Recommend Figure:  Toybiz Spider-man Classics Series 2 – Rhino (or any of the later re-releases)

  • Background:
    • During the Iron Man’s Demon in a Bottle Storyline, Tony Stark realized that Justin Hammer had been providing many tech based villains upgrades to their outfits, including Rhino. He would use this for many years, like when he was a member of the Sinister Syndicate.
  • Why you need it for your collection?:
    • Considering it’s size and the limited articulation, unless you have to have it for your Sinister Syndicate display I would say skip this figure.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • Yes but not a priority.

Ends of Earth

Recommend Figure:  Hasbro Marvel Legends Spider-man Rhino wave – Rhino

  • Background:
    • After the death of his wife, Rhino fell into depression and wished for death. Upon hearing Doc Ock’s plan to destroy the Earth before his own death, Rhino joined him as a member of his Sinister Six. He would begin wearing this upgraded suit.
  • Why you need it for your collection?:
    • If you don’t like the somewhat goofy expression on the other head, then this would make a perfect stand in for your collection. It would work nicely with Spider-man’s Armor MKIII, Silver Sable and other character from that storyline.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No. Out of the one on this page, this is the only one I find is perfect as is.

Needs
