  • Origin: Depowered human mutate, originally mutated via exposure to his parents cosmic rays through birth, formerly disguised as a Mutant
  • Universe: Marvel Prime Universe (Earth-616)

This child can create entire universes with just one thought. Introduced in Fantastic Four Annual #6 (1968) by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Franklin is the son of Reed Richard and Sue Storm of the Fantastic Four, named after Sue’s father. Because of the cosmic radiation that gave his parents their powers, also gave Franklin incredible powers, making people believe he was a mutant. Because he was the son of superheroes, he was constantly under threat from many villains. He would later join the Power Pack before he was kidnapped by his grandfather and was replaced with an older version of himself, who joined the F4 as Psi-Lord and later lead the Fantastic Force. This version of Franklin would later be erased from the timeline and the young Franklin would be returned to his parents.

Because of his growing powers, he became a target for Onslaught, who absorbed him to increase his powers. Franklin was rescued but saw the apparent death of his family and friends. In reality, Franklin had created a pocket universe and had all those that died begin their lives in that world again. They all return to the Prime universe and this universe was placed on the opposite side of the sun as Counter-Earth. After meeting and witnessing the death of a future version of his sister, Franklin exhausted his powers to allow Sue to become pregnant with the child that would become Valeria. After a few more adventures, Franklin would join the Future Foundation, taking up the number 5 of the team. After the Secret Wars, he would use his powers to rebuild the Multiverse. He would use this time to take on the codename Powerhouse. He would later become the object of a feud between the X-men and the F4, where it was revealed that Franklin wasn’t a mutant.

Outside of comic fans, few people even know that Franklin exists let alone that the F4 had a kid. None the less, he would receive a pack-in figure as part of the F4 box set from Toybiz. He would receive a teenage figure from Hasbro as part of a 2-pack with (rumored) Valeria and a pack-in Turg.

Mark Waid’s Fantastic Four

Recommend Figure:  Toybiz Marvel Legends Fantastic Four Box set Franklin Richards, Invisible Woman, Mr. Fantastic, Thing, Human Torch, Herbie and Dr.Doom

  • Background:
    • Franklin wouldn’t receive an official costume until the F4 became the Future Foundation. He was usually seen in kids’ clothes. However, he could be seen in a blue t-shirt with the f4 (or 4 1/2) writing on it.
  • Why you need it for your collection?:
    • To comic fans, Franklin is a huge part of the F4 comic books, particularly alongside his sister Valeria. You would need it for that but given that the set was hard to find when it was new.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • Yes but in one of his actual costumed version.

Fresh Start

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends Fantastic Four 2-pack – Franklin Richard with Turg and Valeria

  • Background:
    • After spending many years recreating the multiverse (though it was only a few months in 616 universe), the Richards returned to the Prime universe with Franklin and Valeria now being teenagers. They would start wearing the “Fresh Start” costume of the F4, with Franklin wearing an F instead of 4. He also dyed his hair black in a form of rebellion.
  • Why do you need it for your collection?
    • If you missed the older version and need to add Franklin to your F4 collection, you will need this especially if got the Super-Skrull wave versions of the F4.
  • Does it need a remake?
    • No.
