He was the first Ghost Rider but he has nothing to do with the flaming skull version. Introduced in Ghost Rider #1 (1966) by Dick AyersGary Friedrich and Roy Thomas, Carter Slade was born in the 19th century, being a teacher. After witnessing what appeared to be some Native American attacking some locals. He followed them and discovered that they weren’t Natives but were white men pretending to be Natives. They were trying to steal cattle and and drive settler’s from their land. Despite putting up a good effort, he was shot several times and left for dead. But he didn’t die as he was found by Jamie Jacobs and took the body away. Happening upon a real Native American settlement, the medicine man of the tribe, believing Slade to be their destined warriors, uses some dust from a meteorite to heal Carter. Carter was given a costume and tamed the horse Banshee and became the wild west heroes, Ghost Rider. (Later changed to Phantom Rider to separate him for Johnny Blaze).

After getting payback against the rustlers, he opened a school and continued his role as vigilante. He would team up with the other western heroes, like Rawhide Kid. The role would eventually be taken over by his brother Lincoln after Carter’s death. However, Lincoln became unhinged and when he kidnapped and drugged Mockingbird, who had traveled back in time with the WCA, Mockingbird would eventually let Lincoln fall to his death. Back in modern times, Lincoln’s spirit would take over his descendant’s body, Hamilton, using it to harass Mockingbird. After he found out what his brother was doing, Carter also took over Hamilton’s body. He subdued his brother and was about to be exorcised to by Daimon Hellstrom, when Hamilton intervened to hell to save his great-great-granduncle. Carter resided in Hamilton’s body but didn’t control him. Instead he came Hamilton his powers as the Phantom Rider, guiding Hamilton in his guide. After Hamilton died, Carter was later seen in the War of the Realm, having been summoned by Kushala, the Sorcerer Supreme of the West Wild period, to aid in protect Thor’s sister, along with other Wild west hero.

    • This is the costume Carter, and pretty much all Phantom Riders, have worn, even the female version. It is said to be enchanted.
  • Why do you need it for your collection?
    • As the first true Western figure we have gotten, there isn’t many places you could put this character. You could put him in a Ghost Rider display and that is about it until we get some more of these types of characters.
  • Does it need a remake?
    • No.
