God, talk about being too negative. Introduced in Free Comic Book Day 2007 (Spider-Man) #1 (2007) by Dan Slott and Phil Jimenez, the man who would become Mr. Negative was part of a Chinese gang known for smuggling people to the US. When the ship was shipwrecked, he stole the identity of one of the men, Martin Li, faking his death. He was captured by Silvermane’s Maggia and handed over to Simon Marshall. The chemist tested his drug on Li as well as others, like Tyrone Johnson and Tandy Bowen. All three escaped and thanks to the drug develop powers with Johnson and Bowen becoming Cloak and Dagger and Li became Mr. Negative. However, the drug also caused him to develop split personality, with Li being a kind-heart man who worked to help people and Mr. Negative running a crime gang known as the Inner Demon.

As Li, he would begin building his business becoming a philanthropist who set up the FEAST organization, which would provide for New Yorks homeless and needy. Peter Parker’s Aunt May as well as Eddy Brock would begin working there, the latter being cured of his cancer by Mr. Negative. Mr. Negative came into conflict with Spider-man for the first time when the crime boss made a play against the Maggia, using a bioweapon known as Devil’s Breath. Li on the other hand entered politics but was targeted by Menace, who was working to help her father win as well as a smear campaign by Dexter Bennett the new owner of the Daily Bugle. Mr. N would recruit Hammerhead and transfer his mind into a robotic body. The FEAST center would come under attack by Mac Gargan’s Venom, which caused Eddy Brock to activate the remaining symbiote in his system that was corrupted by Mr. N becoming Anti-Venom. Even after his opponent’s daughter was revealed to be Menace, Li lost the mayoral election to J. Jonah Jameson. Brock would later learn the truth behind Mr. N. and Li and began to try and expose him.

Mr. N. began a war with the Hood, refusing to join his gang. The Hood sent the White Dragon to attack Mr. N. but he used his powers on the assassin sending him back as a double agent, but he was killed. The Hood used his connection to HAMMER to make them seal Chinatown, but this brought the attention of Spider-man, who rescued Li. Mr. N. used his powers to corrupt Spider-man sending the wed head to fight for him. Spider-man would fight Hood’s gang and was sent to kill Betty Brant, who was about to expose Li. (Spider-man got better). The war erupted in Chinatown until Osborn was blackmailed into siding with Mr. N. Anti-Venom, alongside Spider-man and Wraith, would work together and Wraith used her tech to expose Li and Mr. N to the public. Mr. N captured Li by Mr. N.’s men who waited for Li to turn into Mr. N.

He would eventually learn that Wraith was really Captain Yuri Watanabe of the NYPD and began a campaign of revenge. After a long campaign, he was arrested but of course escaped. He would corrupt Cloak and Dagger, using them as his enforcers. He began developing a new drug to make his effect last but was captured and arrested. His minions used the drugs on Cloak and Dagger. He would begin to transform back into Li again and was deported to China. He was rescued by Cloak and Dagger, and Li would learn of his Negative side. The two personalities began working together and began a campaign to take over the Chinese underworld. However, Spider-man, now the owner of Parker Industries, developed a drug to cure his friends but Li would escape. He would later learn of Sin Eater purifying power, he begged the criminal to cure him. He was cured of the Negative side but when Sin Eater was defeated, he began to be corrupted. He would go onto join Kingpin gang.

Mr. Negative was a little known and recent character that many people wouldn’t have heard of until he was given the role of the main villain of the first half of the Insomniac’s Spider-man video game. Since then, people have been requesting him for a while, with him receiving a figure as a Gamestop exclusive 2-pack with one of his Inner Demon minions.
