She was an inspiration for many female heroes. Introduced in Marvel Mystery Comics #49 (1943) by Otto Binder and Al Gabriele, Madeline Joyce was a young socialite when she was caught in an electric storm. She was struck by lighting but survive due to it activating her mutant powers. When the Invaders were captured and brainwashed by the Red Skull, Bucky sent out a single for help. Joyce, now Miss America, alongside the Whizzer (Drake). The pair would developed an instant attraction. They aided Bucky, who had set up a new team Liberty Legion, and helped save the Invaders. They would remain with the team and soon engaged. They left the Legion and joined the Invaders in Europe.

After the war, they would join the short lived All-Winners Squad. They would return to the states and were married. They began working for the government at a nuclear plant but an old enemy of the AWS bombarded the couple in radiation. It didn’t effect the couple but the baby in Madelene’s body was give a large dose of it. Because he was given off massive amounts of radiation, the government took custody of the baby and place him in a chrono chamber. (He would eventually grow up to become Nuklo). She became pregnant a second time but in a trip to Wundagore, she had a stillbirth, with the baby being more mutated and giving off more radiation then their first son. She died soon after. This cause Whizzer to flee Wundagore in grief and would eventually begun to believe that the Maximoff twins were his kids.
