I don’t care how this sounds but pick a skin color woman! Introduced in Avengers #112 (1973) by Steve Englehart and Don Heck, Mantis is the daughter of Lua Nguyen and Gustav Brandt, the Zodiac member Libra. While as a child, she was trained by the Priest of Pama, a sect of Kree that wanted to protect the Cotati, who believed her to be the Celestial Madonna. When she turned 18, she had her mindwiped and was given false memories of a childhood as an orphan in Vietnam, in order for her to experience a regular human life. Later she encounters Swordsman, who was on the runs from the Avengers. He became infatuated with her and wanted to lead a heroic life. They traveled to the US and joined the Avengers. She would become involved with many of their adventures and was involved in a love triangle between Vision and Scarlet Witch. She was eventually kidnapped by Kang, along with other women who he believed to be the Celestial Madonna. After a few battles, Swordsman sacrificed his live to save her. She buried him in Vietnam under a tree she remembered from her childhood. A Cotati eventually took over his body and after some explanations, she married him, having a double wedding with the Vision and Scarlet Witch couple. Mantis and her husband left the Avengers and gave birth to the Celestial Messiah.

After leaving her child to be raise by the Cotati to fulfill his destiny, leaving her physical body and creating a new one, (and after spending time at the other major comic company), she would eventually travel the cosmos, where she learns that the Elders of the Universe were planning to kill Galactus with the Infinity Gems. She sought the aid of Silver Surfer but died in battle. Her spirit was sent back to Earth and, with the help of the WCA, rediscovered her past. She became involved with several more adventures before falling into obscurity but like many cosmic heroes, she returned during an Annihilation event. During Ultron’s rule of the Phalanx, she was one of a team of non-tech enhanced prisoner that the Kree assembled to fight back against the Phalanx under the leadership of Star-Lord.

After Ultron’s defeat, she would join Star-Lord’s new team that would adopt the name Guardians of the Galaxy. She would remain at Knowhere as a homebase operator. However, it was later revealed that she had used her power to force the rest of the members to join the team. She would remain with the GOTG but when they left Knowhere, she remains behind and because it’s protector as the leader of the Knowhere Corps. Later, during Empyre, she returned to Earth to help stop her son Quoi and his Cotati army from turning Earth into their new planet. She has since joined the GOTG when it became the official peace enforcers of the Galactis Council.

Possible Figures

  • Which has the best chance of being made? – Out of these 3 have the best chance of being made, two sharing the same spot, the Classic and Cosmic. This is because they are they same costume but with different skin color. Next is the GOTG I version as it is her second most famous costume and what many modern reader were introduced to. The Strikeforce is also possible as it’s only a simple repaint. The rest are in order of The Knowhere corps, Empyre, GOTG II, GOTG III and Celestial Destiny.
  • How can it be made? – It’s actually surprising we haven’t had a comic version of Mantis yet, considering her major role in the MCU. If they do the classic version they could use the standard female mold and the more uniformed looks could use the Black widow mold. This can easily be place in an Avengers OR Cosmic/GOTG wave, or even a GOTG box set.
