Okay, maybe her colors are a bit too on the nose for her character. Introduced in Runaways #1 (2003) by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona, Karolina, like the rest of the Runaway, grew up believing that she and her parents were normal yet rich human. However, it turned out they were all aliens, Majesdanian, a race that can control solar rays. Not only that, but they were also part of the Pride, a group of super-villains who would sacrifice people to Elder Gods to gain powers. Such was the case when she and the other members of the future Runaways witness their parents murder a girl in a ritual. This caused them all to flee from their parents, determined to take down their parents. She would later discovered her powers after removing a bracelet that her parents gave her and began to hate her heritage. She was even willing to sacrifice herself to a vampire only for her powers to turn the vampire to dust due to her solar powers.
Eventually her parents were stopped and she was sent into foster care. There with her drug addled foster parents, she received therapy. She would eventually organised a reunion of the Runaway and escaped her foster home. She would begin to accept her alien heritage but kept her homosexuality a secret for a while, which she would eventually reveal when she tried to kiss Nico but she refused. She would later learn that she had a fiancée, a Skrull Prince called Xavin. After defeating her friends, Xavin told Karolina that he won’t force her to marry him but he hoped that their wedding out end the war between the Skrulls and Majesdanian. When she told Xavin she couldn’t love a man and couldn’t live a lie, Xavin changed his sex to a woman to accommodate her. They traveled to their home planet and were about to wed before a fight brought out in the ceremony. They returned to Earth but in revenge, her people came to put her to trail for her parents starting the war. Wanting to save her, Xavin took her form and let herself be taken instead.
An encounter with the Avengers Academy allowed her to meet Julie Powers, who she would begin dating. When Chase and Nico were kidnapped by Arcade, she took over the leadership role of the Runaways but the team would disbanded after they returned with Karolina attending Pomona College, seeing a therapist to help with her trauma. When Gert Yorkes returned to the living, she helped reformed the Runaways and although she initially refused, Karolina would join the team. At this time she would break up with Julie and not long after, Nico would admit her feelings for Karolina and they began dating. She would eventually leave collage and tried her hands at super heroics. They would join Doc Justice team until they found out that he was staging his protege’s death to heighten his profile. As her power began to become uncontrollable, her people came to help her. She would leave with them to help her people.
Possible Figures
- Which has the best chance of being made? – Karolina doesn’t have a “costume” per-say. She basically wear whatever designer clothes she has on at the time. But if I had to pick it will probably be the first images as it was one they used in multiple projects.
- How can it be made? – This one would obviously use the standard teenage mold with maybe a new pair of pants but the problem is how they will demonstrate her powers and if they can give her that rainbow effect. As for where she can be placed, while I would love a Runaways box set that seems unlikely. I think the only way to get this is a set of 2-packs similar to the Inhumans and Future Foundations sets with a new Nico. If not that, then she could be in a Mini-comic or mixed BAF wave.
